NGWA PEOPLE: Are They Really Cannibals? by Nobody: 9:39pm On Apr 24, 2015 |
Some Yoruba women who got married to Ngwa people in Abia state narrated how they escaped death after their hisbands took them to their individual villages to see their husbands' families. These women came back to Lagos with almost all their children left behind in Abia state. The experiences of these women all took place in Abia state which point to the existence of cannibalism in that part of the country. The question is - Is cannibalism still taking place among NGWA people of Abia state? 3 Likes 2 Shares |

Yes, it is because we are overt cannibals that ohuhu has been able to live for generations and at relative peace in Aba and environs, surrounded by cannibalistic Ngwa on all sides. It is because we are overt cannibals that all those who have managed to miraculously 'escape death' have done so without the slightest evidence to show for their near-death experiences. One would think that by now, after all these long years of supposedly capturing and eating people, we would be pros at this, and all you'd hear in the news is missing persons reports. Instead, it is because we are overt cannibals that what we apparently see are unharmed civilians talking about how they were nearly eaten by us. Unu to.. The cannibal things is a rumour that missionaries had blamed all Igbo and Ibibio peoples of. The origin of these myths comes from the slurs the neighbouring peoples threw/throw at each other. Till today Ibibio people say Anang people are cannibals, Anang people probably feel the same, Igbo peoples used to call Ibibio cannibals, and the Ibibio the same to the Igbo. The thing is there has never been any evidence of cannibalism in eastern Nigeria. It's just a stupid colonial rumour that's been used to demonise the people of Isi Ala Ngwa, people in this day and age still fear going there despite the fact that there has never been any confirmed case of someone being kidnapped to be eaten. Now, being kidnapped for human sacrifice is a different story because probably all groups in southern Nigeria did that. 6 Likes 1 Share |

ezeagu:Well,we can't really point at any group. But if you read G.T Basden's 'Among the Ibo',he gave a detailed report of the existence of Cannibals in Southern Nigeria. These stuffs happened in the past,we shouldn't let it create problems now. 5 Likes 1 Share |

Ihuomadinihu: G.T. Basden is a missionary, he never reported first hand accounts of cannibalism. There are no documented first hand accounts of cannibalism in Nigeria. 2 Likes |

Part (at least) of what Basden wrote about cannibalism in Igboland seem very questionable to me. He, for example, claimed that some of the victims killed at the shrine of the Agbala Oracle in Awka for various crimes were eaten. This is very strange. Such corpses were considered taboo. To consume them makes no sense. 3 Likes |

Missionary works from 100 years ago shouldn't be the primary source for anything apart from pictures and missionary attitudes. 2 Likes |

Ihuomadinihu: I don't think that conclusion should be reached just because he wrote so. That's an appeal to authority and it is a fallacy. Like a poster above said, how many missing persons report come from that area? How come neighboring towns and villages still cohabit with them peacefully till date? I think it's just one baseless stereotype. 2 Likes |

ChinenyeN: Best response even though I don't understand the last bit. lol Igbo dialects truly are remarkably diverse. Why are there so many escapees and no verified reported victims? 6 Likes |

The question is: was any of your friends, relations, townsmen, village member or any known person ever been eaten? Everybody tells the story with much authenticity as if he saw but we all heard from someone who heard from someone who heard from... everything is hearsay. 3 Likes |

ezeagu: Really? These are Ibos. They have a unique hair styling, facial feature and bone structure, including body adornments as the guys in next picture holding human hands severed and ready for boiling when they were caught by British missionaries. This is no rumor or myth. 2 Likes

The Ngwa tribe of the Igbo's ave being stigmatized by this trend of us being canibals just like the mbaise tribe of IMO state have being trailled about being more Cunny, cocky and more dangerous than a snake. But the truth left untold is that at a time long before generations of us were born in Abia state a certain. Migrants of people who came to affiliate with the ngwa people were the ones who were cannibals and becos they were accepted open heartedly by the NGWAS without being suspicious of the kind of lifestyle they lived it became an open accusation and a stigma inflicted on the general Ngwa people. Which are known to be peaceful and noble people 1 Like |
