Which Of The Nigerian Local Languages Would You Like To Learn? by Kossyne(m): 5:42pm On May 18, 2015 |
There's no gainsaying in the fact that Nigeria is country richly blessed with culture. From the sahara desert in the north to the atlantic ocean in the south, diverse cultures cut across different different ethnicity, tribe, regions and state.. However these cultures are perculiar to different tribes and as such serve as a symbol of identity. Language, the arbitrary use of signs and sounds for communication, is a key aspect of culture. There are 521 languages that have been spoken in Nigeria (nine of which are now extinct).[ The official language of Nigeria, English, the former colonial language, was chosen to facilitate the cultural and linguistic unity of the country. Communication in English language is much more popular in the country's urban communities than it is in the rural areas (comprising about three quarters of the country's population). The other major languages are Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, Ibibio, Edo, Fulfulde, and Kanuri.(Wikipaedia) An average Nigerian tends to learn the language of his tribe (mother's tongue) first before the official language. Some who are opportuned to reside outside their geo political zone add the language of their residential state to their language portfolio...for the rest, it's just the mother tongue, official language and possibly a desire to learn another language that the fund fascinating....Unfortunately I happen to fall among this category... I'm from the east and I will like to learn yoruba......so what of u ?......let's hear it... Cc: lalasticlala |

Iaz93: Never heard someone speak it. Or maybe I do, but I don't know cos my fulani and hausa friends speak Hausa most of the time. How does Fulfulde sound? Melodious? Tongue twister? |
Re: Which Of The Nigerian Local Languages Would You Like To Learn? by Iaz93: 12:08pm On Jul 12, 2015 |
Joavid:Fulfulde is melodious, lovely. .especially when you hear 'em beautiful young girls speaking it. You'd wish you could communicate/reason with them on that level. A bit of a tongue twister, also. 1 Like |
