Out-of-favour Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has been sent packing by English Championship outfit Reading. According to Reading Chronicle, the well-travelled former Blackburn star, who sensationally returned to English football after he joined Royals as a free agent in February, was ushered through the Madejski Stadium exit door along with Zat Knight, Jure Travner, Danny Guthrie, Ryan Edwards, Dan Lincoln, Jonathan Henly, George McLennan and Aleks Gogic. The club, who failed to gain promotion to the Premier League after they placed 19th in the Championship table – and crashed out in the semifinals of the FA Cup, said the players were released to enable manager Steve Clarke to sign quality players ahead of next season. “As we enter our third year out of the Premier League, the club’s owners recognise the need for Steve Clarke to freshen his squad ahead of the new campaign, and this is the beginning of that process,” Reading Chronicle quoted the Royals as saying. “After a period of financial instability and with the Financial Fair Play regulations in place, the owners are also making a concerted effort to get back to the sensible wage principles that have long been the club’s trademark. “Striking the right balance will be key to a sustainable model for success.” Aiyegbeni, who represented Nigeria at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, failed to hit the back of the net in seven appearances for Reading in the season. His only goal for the outfit came in their 2-1 defeat of Derby County in the FA Cup fifth round match. The 32-year-old joined Reading after his contract with Qatari side Al Rayyan ended last summer. Aiyegbeni has also played for Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton, Leicester City, Chinese side Guangzhou, as well as Isreali clubs Hapoel Kfar Saba and Maccabi Haifa. http://www.punchng.com/sports/reading-dump-aiyegbeni/ |
