The rate of unemployment in the country is alarming. If anyone thinks that any government will provide employment, it is like building castle in the air. How will Government provide jobs when privatisation is the order of the day? Indirectly, what the government is telling us is that they are not employer of labour. It is private sector that drives the economy. To worsen the case, it is most likely that some parastatals might be merged, meaning that there will be duplication of functions. The implication is that some people may need to be sacked. The role of government essentially is the creation of enabling environment for small businesses and entrepreneurship to thrive. As many small businesses are springing up, more jobs will be created. Also, government will generate more revenue in form of taxes. Mostly, the development will see in developed countries are fuelled by small businesses. Even, all these blue chip companies still rely on small businesses to function. See below the statistics of the U.S. economy Small businesses make up: 99.7 percent of U.S. employer firms, 63 percent of net new private-sector jobs, 48.5 percent of private-sector employment, 42 percent of private-sector payroll, 46 percent of private-sector output, 37 percent of high-tech employment, 98 percent of firms exporting goods, and 33 percent of exporting value.
