Durban - A police officer has been killed by awaiting trial
prisoners in the holding cells at the Esikhaleni police
station, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Saturday.
The 54-year-old warrant officer, who was a cell
commander, was allegedly strangled on Friday afternoon
inside the cells, spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said.
"They allegedly strangled him with a blanket until he lost
consciousness.
"He was taken to hospital for medical attention, however
he passed away a short while later," said Naicker.
Five men, who were awaiting trial for armed robbery and
housebreaking cases would be charged with the officer's
murder.
KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General
Mmamonnye Ngobeni condemned the killing saying this
was a senseless act committed by those who have no
respect for the law.
"I wish to extended my deepest condolences to the family
of our deceased colleague.
"We will ensure that his killers get what they deserve by
ensuring that the case is thoroughly investigated before
the matter goes for trial," she said.
