Goalkeeper - Gianluigi Buffon Still the most expensive goalkeeper
in history, Buffon has now been on
the losing side twice in Champions
League finals with Juventus. After a bore draw with AC Milan in
the 2003 final at Old Trafford, he
saved two penalties but was unable
to prevent his side losing the
shootout. And on Saturday night as the Old
Lady were beaten 3-1 by Barcelona it
may have been his last chance.
Right back - Lilian Thuram France's most-capped player enjoyed
an incredible career for club and
country - both in terms of silverware
and longevity. But he never managed to get his
hands on the Champions League.
Like Buffon, he was on the losing
side for Juventus in 2003. Thuram
moved to Barcelona the summer
after they won it in 2006 and left the summer before they won it again in
2009. Bad luck by any stretch of the
imagination.
Left back - Gianluca Zambrotta A multi-talented wing back who
could play on either side, Zambrotta's
story of Champions League failure is
remarkably similar to Thuram's. He was also on the pitch in 2003 at
Old Trafford, he also moved to
Barcelona in 2006 after Juventus
were demoted for their part in the
Italian match-fixing scandal and also
left the Nou Camp in 2008 before they won it again under Pep
Guardiola.
Centre back - Fabio Cannavaro Despite spending time at Inter Milan,
Real Madrid and having two spells at
Juventus, the player who won the
World Cup and Ballon d'Or in 2006
never even reached the final of a
Champions League. The closest he ever got was with
Inter in 2003, when they were
knocked out at the semi-final stage
by rivals Milan on away goals.
Centre back - Laurent Blanc Another legendary defender who
never made it to a Champions League
final. Blanc may have won the World Cup
in 1998 and Euro 2000 with France
but the closest he came to club
football's top prize was the semi-
finals when Manchester United lost to
Bayer Leverkusen away goals in 2002.
Centre midfield - Lothar Matthaus You probably can't get closer to
winning the Champions League than
Lothar Matthaus. In 1999 at the Nou Camp in
Barcelona, Bayern Munich were
leading Manchester United 1-0 after
an early goal from Mario Basler.
Matthaus was subbed in the 80th-
minute with his job seemingly done. You probably know what happened
next. United struck twice in
stoppage-time to leave Bayern
players stricken on the turf. For 38-
year-old Matthaus it was his last
chance.
Centre midfield - Patrick Vieira Vieira played twice in the Champions
League for Jose Mourinho's
Champions League-winning Inter
Milan side in 2009-10 but had
jumped ship to Manchester City
halfway through the season meaning he never got a medal. With Arsenal, he never made it past
the quarter-final.
Right wing - Pavel Nedved In the 2003 Champions League semi-
final between Juventus and Real
Madrid, Nedved absolutely ran the
show and scored the crucial late third
that assured the Old Lady of their
place in the final. Unfortunately for the Czech
international, he was then booked
for a challenge on Steve McManaman
ruling him out of the final, which, as
we know, Juventus lost on penalties
to AC Milan.
Left wing - Roberto Baggio An incredible player who won the
Ballon d'Or in 1993, Baggio will
probably always be best
remembered for his penalty miss in
the 1994 World Cup final. In some ways it may be a good thing
as it helps people forget his relatively
miserly record in Europe. Despite playing for Juventus, AC
Milan and Inter during the
Champions League era, Baggio never
really got close to Europe's top prize.
No 10 - Dennis Bergkamp Probably the most hotly-contested
position in this XI. Bergkamp just
edges out the likes of Eric Cantona
and Francesco Totti in the No 10 role,
if only for the flying phobia that
forced him to travel by land to so many of Arsenal's away games in
Europe. He was on the bench as Arsenal were
beaten 2-1 in the final by Barcelona
in 2006. He probably would have
made it on to the pitch as well if it
weren't for the fact Arsenal were
down to 10 men from the 18th minute.
Striker - Ronaldo The original Ronaldo, one of the
greatest strikers ever, but one who
was always incredibly unfortunate
with injury. He made the semi-finals in 2003 with
Real Madrid but came unstuck
against Nedved's Juventus. Unluckily for him as well, he was at
AC Milan when they won in 2007, but
was cup-tied after playing earlier in
the competition for Real Madrid.
Manager - Arsene Wenger Has led Arsenal in the Champions
League in every season since
1998-99, but has appeared in the
final just once in 2006 - losing 2-1 to
Barcelona. Substitutes: David Seaman, Sol Campbell, Roberto Ayala, Michael
Ballack, Eric Cantona, Zlatan
Ibrahimovic, Gabriel Batistuta
