Secondly if the Germans recovered the ball ,it would be in a dangerous area where they could strike at the goal quickly! Nigeria was forced to kick the ball long cutting out the midfield. The Nigerian forwards playing with their backs to the goal had a web of Germans to defeat. When they played back the ball to the midfield two banks of Germans would quickly sandwich this island of midfield players. Thus the Nigeria was forced to play in a narrow space nullifying their speed . Whilst as soon as the the Germans recovered the ball they would spread out quickly using the full width of the field. The Nigerians play a counter attacking style of play (Jose Mourihno) . They lack a possession type of football and a counter press . Barcelona was defeated by Bayern Munich using this high press in the Champions league a few years ago. It was for this very reason Barcelona got Neymar and Suarez to nullify the press.
