SOLAR COLLECCTOR
Solar refers to light.
A collector is a device for capturing solar
radiation. Solar radiation is energy in form of
electro masgnetic radiation from the infarred
(long) to the ultra violent (shoort) wave lenghts.
The quantity of solar energy striking the earth’s
surface (solar constant) averages about 1,000
watts per unit square meter under clear skies,
depending upon weather conditions, location and
orientation
Therefore, solar collector may refer to a solar
thermal collector, a solar that collects heat by
absorbing sunlight.
The term “solar collector” may refers to solar hot
water panels, but may refer to installatins such as
solar parabolic troughs and solar towers or basic
installations such as solar air heaters. Solar power
plants usually use the hore complex collectors to
generate electricity by heatinga fluid to drive a
turbine conneted to an electrical generator.
SOLAR ENERGY
Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the
sun hardnessed using a range of ever evolving
tecnologies such as solar heating , solar
photovoltaics, solar thermal energy, solar
archetecture and artificial photosynthesis.
It is an important source of renewable energy and
its technologies are broadly characterize as either
passive solar or active solar depending on the way
they caputure and distribute solar energy or
convert it into solar power.Active solar tecniques
include the use of photovoltaic systems,
concetrated solar power and solar water heating
to harness the energy. Passive solar tecniques
include orienting a building to the sun, selecting
materials with favourable thermal mass or light
dispesing properties and designing spaces that are
naturally circulte air.
In 2011, the International energy agency said that
“the development of affordable, inexhaustible and
clean solar energy technologies will have a huge
longer –term benefits. It will increase countries
energy security through reliance on an indigenous,
inexhaustible and mostly import- independent
resource, enhance sustainability , reduce pollution
lower the costs of mitigating global warming , and
keep fossil fuel prices lower than otherwise .These
advantages are global, hence the additional costs
of the incentive for early deployment should be
consired learning investments, they must be
wiselly spent and need to be widely shared.
SOLAR PANEL FOR ENERGY SUPPLY
Solar power is arguable the cleanest, most reliable
form of renewable energy available, nd it can be
used in several forms to help power your home or
business. Solar-powered photovoltaic (pv) panels
convert the sun’s rays into electricity by exciting
electrons in silicon cells using the photons of light
from the sun. The electricity can then be used to
supply renewable energy to your home or business.
To understand this process further, lets look at
the solar energy compnent. That make up a
complete solar power system.
THE ROOT SYSTEM
In most solar systems, solar panels are placed on
the roof. An ideal site we have no shades on the
panels, especially during the prime sunlight hours
of 9a.m – 3p.m ; a south –facing installation will
usually provide the optimum potential for your
system, but other orientations may provide
sufficent production. Trees or other factors that
cause shading during the day will cause significant
decrease to power production. The importance of
shading and efficiency cannot be over stated. In a
solar panel, if even just one of is 36 cells is
shaded , power production will be reduced by more
than half. Experienced installatin contractors such
as NW. Wind and solar uses a device called a solar
path finder to carefully identify potential areas
of shading prior to installation.
Not every roof has the correct orientation or
angle of inclination to take advantage of the suns
energy. Some systems are designed with pivoting
panels that tracks the sun in its journey across
the sky. Non tracking pv systems shpuld be
inclined at an angle equal to the sites latitude to
absorb the maximum amount of energy year-
round. Alternate orientations and/or incination
maybe used to optimise energy production for
particular times of day or for specific seasons of
the year.
SOLAR PANELS
Solar panels, also known as modules, contains
photovoltaic cells made from silicons that
transform incoming sunlight into electricity rather
than heat. (“photovoltaic”means electricity from
light – photo= light, voltaic= electricity”)
Solar photovoltaic cells consist of a positive and
negative film of silicon placed under a thin silce
of glass. As the photons of the sunlight beats
down upon these cells , they knock the electrons
off the silicons. The negativity charge free
electrons are preferentially attracted to one side
of the silicon cell, which creates an electric
voltage that can be collected and channeled.
Current is gathered by using the individual solar
panels together in series to form a solar
photovoltaic array. Depending on the size of the
installation, multiple strings of solar photovoltaic
arrary cables terminatte in one electrical box,
called a fused array combiner. Contained within
the combiner box are fuses designed to protect
the individual module cables, as well as the
connections that deliver power to the inverter.
The electricity prouduced at this stage is DC
(direct current)and must be converted to AC
(alternate current) suitable for use in your home
business.
USES OF SOLAR PANEL FOR ENERGY SUPPLY
Well, great people , i think i should start this on
behalff of George D because of the request made
by others who have expressed interest in alternate
electricity, especially solar energy. Our
independence is not complete if we are to suffer
frequent power outrage and have been dependent
on the nation’s electricity grid system always. I
have read in this house many times from members
“PHCN don go off, so i will track later when they
come back”. No one can run awayfrom power
outrages in the main electricity grid not even
west, it happens. Hence,we all should be carefull,
have alternate electricity and using renewable
energy is, to me, the best. This means one can
enjoy their independence fully by being totally
free and not “dom” (dominated).
Some of it advantages are:
Lower or no electricity bills.
Compared to generators users, there is no fuel
cost and stress of getting it and no fumes.
People living in the remote locations where power
is unavailable or too expensive to hook –up too can
have electricity.
Just to mention but a few.
Without going into detail, one can enjoy
electricity by means of using solar energy
( energy from the sun), wind mill (using energy
from the wind). Dont forget, where there is
frequent electricity supply from the utility
company, you can storesome energy for backup.
You will need the following to complete a solar
project or backup.
Solar panels.
Power inverter.
Charge controller.
Batteries to store energy.
Wires and cables.
Monitors/ meters.
The solar panel consist of cells called photovoltaic
cells and these, convert the energy recieved from
the sun to electricity in simple terms (this
electricity is a direct current d.c). The panels can
last up to 20 years plus. The panels can be fixed,
adjustable or of the tracking type you can decide
to go for a complete panel from manufacturers
(already made) or build panels by yourself using
solar cells, the latter is for the hobbyist. The
panels are rated in watts e.g S O W solar panel
supplying 12v continous at a given time.
FUNCTION OF SOLAR PANEL
A solar panel is able to function using the solar
enerrgy which is derived from the sun. A large
number of solar effects will help in converting the
solar energy in solar power panel.
The solar power panel should be kept in a clean
place where it gets complete and direct exposure
to sun. The cost of procuring a solar power panel
is not very high and it is also does not accure very
high costs in terms of maintenance. The charges
incurred will be the starting charges as well as
the installation charges. A large number of homes
have starteedbinstalling a solar powr panel in
them in order to perform all the functions which
usually require electrical energy. All the house can
be made to function normall using the electricity
which has been generated by the solar power
panel. The electricity bills can be reduced to avast
extent once a solar power panel has been installed
inside the house.
The roof is the usual place where the solar power
panel will be installed in a house so that it gets
the required amount of exposure to the sun. The
photovoltaic panels on the solar power panel will
convert the solar energy into electrical energy.
The electricity which is generated throug these
panels is mostly DC (direct current) which will be
converted into AC (alternative cureent) with the
help of the inverter. This inverter will usually be
made availblealong with the solar power panel. The
grid-tie system will also make use of solar energy
in other to provide electricity for homes. Silicon is
one of the main materials which are usually used
for making a solar power panel.
Every solar power panel contains many different
silicon cells or solar cells. Photons will strike the
surface of this solar cells and then generate an
ellectrical current . One such solar cell can
geenerate 0.5 volts of electricity. A 12 volts olar
panel will contain 36 solar cells which will help in
generating 17 volts or electricity. A 24 volt solar
cell and it can generate 24 volts of electricity.
The voltages is likely to reduce when the solar
power panels is being charged. Every house will
require many different solar power panels which
will helpin generating the required amount of
electricity for operating all appliances in the
house. The main advantage of making use of high
voltage output is that it will require small wires to
transfer the electricity from the solar panel to
the batteries. The main advantage of these solar
panel is that they will reduce the cost of
electricity which is needed to perform all the
daily functions.
