Background check services are the different ways we verify claims or personal disposition of individuals or even organizations we are engaged with in some form or level of transactions. This is very important given that we live in a world where there are no saints, and even those we know as saints would need to be vetted to be sure they are really what we know them to be.

At the core of the need for background check services are the delicate issues of security and trust. And so, the need not to leave anything to chance or assumption heightens relevance of, if not the urgency for, background check services. Accordingly, background check services cover the whole gamut of transactions requiring security or trust as captured in these important (but not exhaustive) areas:

1. Employment: Background check services are carried out prior to or after employment of new staff. Here information provided in the resume is under scrutiny. Such information includes employment history and dates, past employer verification, referees or guarantors’ verification, verification of academic and professional certificates, character check or criminal history. The details can also include any other aspect that the current employer may consider sensitive.

2. Due diligence: Checks in this area may include and not limited to customers and vendor company verification. Here information such as stated key management staff and company address are under scrutiny. Since a corporate entity is regarded as a person, such matters of character and credibility can also come under such watch. Similarly, background checks are needed where investments or some type of high risk or high value projects or ventures are contemplated or negotiated.

3. Litigation: In litigation situations, background checks can become ammunition for attacking or weakening the claims or arguments of an opponent or even their witnesses. Here, this involves some discrete gathering of information or concrete evidence that may be useful in countering arguments from a contending party or attacking the credibility of the person of a witness in the case thereby impeaching their testimony.

4. Child care: Obviously, children are prized aspects of our lives, and so care should be expended in protecting them from risks and dangers. Incidentally, child care risks are relative to the kind and character of persons closest to them at home, in school and other places. In this case, background checks should not be optional or deferred for long where caregivers at home and in school are concerned. As a rule, caregivers, stewards in the home including drivers and all who have regular access to our homes and children, who also are directly tied to us in some ways, should be vetted through background checks. Also, caregivers and teachers in kindergarten, preschool, crèche or whatever other names they are known should be vetted as such. Same applies to primary schools, especially those of the private sector. It is proper that parents and guardians make inquiries on the background check status of a preferred school’s caregivers or teachers. It would also not be out of place to demand sighting validating documents.

5. Relationships: Here reference is to such relationships where emotional intimacy, love or marriage or the prospects of such are in focus. Considering the emotional energy, time and resources that often accompany such relationships, it is wise that a concerned party to the relationship contract a professional to run some discrete checks on the other party’s person regarding character, veracity of his claims as per employment or business status, religious and social affiliations, recent past or current relationship with a consequential opposite sex and traceable movements. Details for such vetting may also include such other areas of interest to the party concerned, though as much as legality allows. In most cases, the aim is to safeguard the concerned party from pains and other fallouts which follow the discovery of false or dubious or malicious disposition or intent of the other party. This is more so given that certain persons are out to take advantage of the opposite sex especially where the other person involved is upwardly mobile and is of some value. Similarly, in some cultures, go-betweens are engaged by parents or immediate family relatives to do some background checks on a prospective suitor and his family. Given the realities of modern life and the pressures on city dwellers, and also factoring in the attendant realities of inter-ethnic and inter-racial marriages, engaging a relevant security professional to source relevant information would not be out of place in this regard.

In all this, what will make the difference is the importance and urgency one whose personal or business activities are in the eye of risks accords engaging needful actions so as not to be adversely affected by the potential or actual impacts of identified risks.
