Studying Master's Degree Vs Having Work Experience- A Bitter Choice by kinibigdeal(m): 12:23am On Jun 17, 2015
Maybe you have seen a very interesting job position but think you are not enough prepared for it. Maybe you are passionate about a certain topic, and would like to deepen your level of knowledge and understanding. No matter what your case is, many of us wonder what to do next after we finish our undergraduate studies: should you study a master’s degree or should you enter the labor market right away to gain work experience? The choice remains plausible.

Take a close look at the following piece.

Work experience

1. If you are not thinking of pursuing a career in the field of research, you are not required to be in the possession of master's degree when it comes to work experience

2. Other areas of work and job may demand a more practical approach and having a work experience may represent a competitive edge

3. Some skills cant be taught in the classroom, you can only get them in the field or work experience.

4. It will be difficult to get a job immediately after completing your master's degree or stepping out of the university due to job experience

5. Why did you choose to have work experience instead of further studying a master's degree? Working instead of studying a master's degree doesnt necessarily means you are not acquring knowledge to stay competitive

Master's degree

1. In Nigeria where we celebrate certificate and not knowledge. Some employers may demand candidates with a masters degree without specifying the areas of expertize. It means others with no such degree will be filtered out.

2. Studying master's degree can be a good option to gain fresh and advanced knowledge and gain confidence with your area of expertize. Studying masters programs is hard, try to enjoy learning the subject in order to make sure you finalize the program on time.

3. Master's degree program demands time. In most cases, it will be hard to combine work with study. Try to consider your financial backing before you embark on it.

4. Some of us embark on master's degree because we cannot get a job or we want a better paid position. It may not necessarily be the right decision for us. Employers most times want to learn from what you gain from your master's studies and if your knowledge cannot bring competition to the table, your degree is not worth it
