a home lab doesnt need to be robust except you have the bucks to flaunt around. Start with a 24 port patch panel attached to a 6U rack, hook to a cheap switch attach and router.

The last time i worked with vmware was a year ago, while doing ccna routing and switching on gns3. Any machine with 4 gig ram and 3.1ghz processor would run 3 switches, 1 access server, 1 firewall and 2 routers without much glitch. Go beyond this and your home lab will definitely lag.

A lab is where u try to create or simulate real life setup of systems, servers, or networked environment in ur home or on ur pc.
It is very good because it helps u to test configurations b4 implementating it in a production environment. U can also use it to learn skills. Virtual machines are used to simulate real systems.
