A group of teenage inventors at the Isaac Newton Academy in Illford in the united kingdom have invented a condom that changes coloure in the presence of Sexually transmitted infections (STDs). The three teenagers won the Teen Tech awards with their novel innovation.
Chemicals in the condom material react with viruses and bacteria – meaning the latex would turn green in the presence of chlamydia, yellow for herpes, purple for HPV and blue for syphilis, the teenagers explained.
“We created the S.T.EYE as a new way for STI detection to help the future of the next generation,” said Ali, according to accounts.
The inventors – 14-year-olds Daanyaal Ali and Chirag Shah, and Muaz Nawas, 13 – won 1,000 pounds and a trip to Buckingham Palace, for placing first in the invention competition.
Other inventions included a Wi-Fi connected hair clip that changes colors to match the wearer’s clothing, and a bracelet that monitors the wearer’s pulse – and could call emergency services in case of trouble, according to reports.
