ISSAN (Information Security Society of Africa-Nigeria) has called for President Buhari to implement the Cybercrime Bill that was signed into law by his predecessor, President Goodluck Jonathan.

ISSAN has claimed that the move would save Nigeria billions of Naira that is currently being lost to cyber criminals every year. ISSAN called for the urgent implementation of the bill and praised the previous administration for their decision to sign the bill into law. The society stressed that it would help sanitize the country’s cyberspace.

The ISSAN President and General Manager, Union Bank, Dr. David Isiavwe, said that the law would protect innocent civilians from cybercriminals looking to defraud people of their hard-earned money. ISSAN is hopeful that the bill will be passed as part of the President's pre-election promise to eradicate corruption by upholding and strengthening the rule of law.

He went on to add,
“Also the new law will help individuals to know their rights as well as the appropriate use of their computer systems and the need to protect themselves against the activities of fraudsters in electronic communications.

“The ISSAN will also collaborate with relevant stakeholders to create the needed awareness by all and sundry until Nigeria successfully reduces the activities of cyber criminals to the barest minimum.”

All he has to do is give effect to the law.

How can you say that cyber affairs are not important when so much business is done online?

That's almost as naive as claiming that bank regulation is not necessary now because of one issue or another - all of these things need attention.

Read my comment again bro, i never said is not essential but we have more pressing issues than cyber crime.

Cybercrime is not just a bill government can just assent into law without vividly examining its entails in proportion with its subjects.

Do you know what is cyber? A world of its own in visual simulation. If you ever check US cybercrime law, you will notice that Nigeria is never ripe for that.

The law was reviewed and signed by the previous administration.

This should be a mere formality.

Cybercrime is a huge issue that needs immediate action otherwise Nigeria will be playing catch up on yet another issue for the next 20-30 years.

Already Nigerian cybercrooks are causing havoc in Nigeria and besmirching the nation. A delay in such a bill would cause/allow further harm.

You are taking the issue of cybercrime laws as if it is a way of tightening security vulnerability of cyberworld. It is a criminal act dealing with computers and networks (called hacking) and punishments to be meted on perpetrators of such crime.

The level of computer and Internet penetration and awareness in Nigeria is still at its lowest. If signed, many naive Nigerian on cyber things will be committing such crime unknowingly. We are not slaves to laws but laws are meant to control us.

Cybercrime encompasses many many aspects of our daily life, sharing of files, commenting on Nairaland, facebook usage, eating while browsing and pretty huge stuffs that may amaze an average Nigerian computer and Internet user.

No.

You don't know what you are talking about.

This crime is dealing with the abuse of computers to commit crimes.

The use of botnets and malware.

The trade in stolen information via electronic means.

It will not hurt the average user - I don't even know where you got that from.

I KNOW WHAT AM TALKING ABOUT BRUH

sharing of files, commenting on Nairaland, facebook usage, eating while browsing and pretty huge stuffs

We are saying the same thing. Those stuffs you pointed out is included in the BOLDED.

Still get my point here, it is not such a pretty much pressing issue now. We need it when other formalities must have been meted.

United States didn't just made cybercrime laws immediately after the invention of Internet and computer. It is a slow process as the citizens get integrated in the cybernetics.
