I don't think its a Nigerian thing only, most probably an African thing. It goes two ways; if it does not taste bitter or hurt extremely then its not medicinal.

That's why in East and South African nations they always make boys get circumized at ages they know it hurts badly as opposed to painlessly via anasthesia.
