Given the dynamic nature and complexities surrounding the study of Economics, I have decided to delineate 5 skills that would help any Economist become relevant in the work place. This is because most theories in Economics are limited in practical reality due to unreasonable assumptions. 1. STRONG ANALYTICAL SKILLS To excel as an Economist, you need a thorough knowledge of your analytical tools. They include Mathematical kits (Graph, Bar and Pie Chart, histogram) and personal qualities such as intellectual acumen, curiosity and communication skills. 2. EXCELLENT KNOWLEDGE OF CALCULUS and ALGEBRA Although you need a very strong quantitative ability, more focused knowledge on Calculus and Algebra may ensure a successful career. This skill is particularly neccessary for those who intend to pursue a postgraduate study in Economics and end up in the Academics or as a Researcher. Calculus and Algebra enables us to quantify dynamic phenomenas. 3. GOOD MODELLING SKILLS I have said earlier how important having good quantitative and verbal skills are. However, having an excellent ability to present a simplified view of an Economic Phenomena can be quite helpful in understanding a transient concept. 4. PROACTIVE NATURE Economics involve a lot of forecasting and policy decision making. As a policy maker, you are expected to know the ripple effect of any policy you intend to initiate and if possible plan alternative course of action, if the policy proves futile. 5. OPEN TO CRITICISM An Economist must be open to criticism, because of its complex nature. Even the Greats; Keynes, Adam Smith, Marshall et al, have always been criticised for presenting unapplicable theories.
