khalifer: If only we have educative and research institutions in Nigeria, they would have found out why the ancestors refuse to eat them. Some fish are poisonous of course and can kill humans instantly if they are not expertly prepared. 1 Like |

I have observed and realised that some things that are forbidden in some land and culture has nothing to do with "JuJu". Some have leaved there usefulness, while others are even more relevant now. |

The reason it was forbidden wasnt actually stated. What if it was known to kill people back in the days for being poisonous? Africans and their superstitions! I tire for una. Not everything is edible you know. Who knows, it might have been blow fish that was eaten. |

From my "not so much" knowledge.. There's a fish called shell fish. It contains a neurotoxin called saxitoxin.. This has a paralytic effect on body body systems, including the respiratory airways.. You know the implication when the airway is paralysed and one can no longer breath.. I guess that forbidden fish may belong here... |

delishpot:Doesn't look like that. It just an ordinary catfish you know. The rule is that once the fish swims out of the pond to waterways in the swamp, then are free to kill and eat it. But as long as it's in the pond, you dare not touch it. I remember back then in the raining season, we use to go to swamps around the pond area to set hooks and bridge traps in the gutters, once there is heavy rain, we are already sure that there is gonna be a big catch ..Use to be fun then ..Chai Good old days |

delishpot:My brother no be small thing oo ...I really enjoyed hunting expedition then. It was the reason I always insist on going to the village then during holidays. My dad liked it then. Once the school vacates, voom to the village straight while my brothers and sisters stays in the city. My uncle in living in the village then was a big farmer but he doesn't allow me go farm(he knew I won't ever come to village if he sends me to farm )..So once my cousins leaves, with other small children in the compound, we will run around the whole village hunting and doing all kinds of things till evening ...Thats when we started going to that pond to see those fishes..the pond is a kind of deity with a big shrine with all kinds of statues..We normally use palm fruits to attract the fishes then ..Oboy come and see catfish but you dare not hurt nor kill it. My uncles has about 13 cows then, sometimes I go out with them to rear the cows ..But one thing was that whenever I came back to the city then, my brothers use to laugh at me because I always look so rough and tattered ..that's how the nicknamed me Cattle Rearer but wetin concern me..Children of these days don't enjoy life at all.. |
