The Issue Of Online Harassment In Nigeria--- by topblogger12(f): 4:53pm On Aug 01, 2015
The internet has grown exponentially in Nigeria....from 78,740 internet users in the year 2000 to 67,101,45 users by the year 2014 ( source: Internet Live Stats ), we have a majority of Nigerians who practically live their lives online.

But in as much as we Post on Facebook, tweet on twitter, rant on Nairaland etc.... there is an aspect of the internet that is rearing its head in the Nigerian Online world.

Online harassment.....well this isn't the regular online argument rant we have on the social media...... we are talking about online threats and bullying that lead to the victims fear for their lives and safety.

They have been cases and experiences of people who have bullied and even received death threats online. maybe because they are from a particular tribe.... a supporter of a particular political party of a gender (statistics around the world have shown women are the most victims from online harassment).......

CAN THE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENTS HELP?

During the build up to this write-up, i went to a police station in Abuja and an Officer that someone on TWITTER threatened to come to my house and beat me up for supporting a Political party........
and the first question he asked me was, : "what is TWITTER?" Like seriously? !! i had to cool my heels and made no further complaint.....

How can our Law enforcement agents fight Online harassment when they have no Idea how it works...........

I'd like your comments on this issue.......

In as much as this post is short, i get the gist of this post ......sometime ago, i watch a video on youtube talking about online harassment and people been threatened online.....and if you guys remember, during the last election....many people received death threats online...now is that permissible?

Should the social media we practically spend all time on be a place where our lives are threatened?.........

Or what if as a Woman you find Nude Pictures of yourself posted on a P*rn website will you sue the poster ? or is there a law that protects US online?.........this issue the OP brought out is serious and we should think about it....i guess it's only when you face a real death threat or when you are bullied online ...only then will you understand this post. Nice one @OP.........

The Internet is an avenue for those who do not have a voice to speak up. And usually most of these people aren't nice. There are juvenile delinquents, psychotic personalities, frustrated people who simply want to vent thier frustrations on others and a vast majority of jobless people who because of the very low browsing tariff plans are able to spend most of thier bored lives online.

The Internet is a double edged sword. One one hand it serves as a conduit to bring people and ideas together hopefully for the betterment of mankind. Unfortunately the Internet has no way of screening the immature from the mature or the crackheads from the sane minded.

Someone comes online and spews ABSOLUTE THRASH because he has access to the Internet. Poses to be a graduate from a foreign University meanwhile he is having problems passing JAMB in real life. Pretends to be an adult meanwhile he is a teenager who has never seen the world past his mother's wrapper. And such people engage well meaning individuals in serious conversations often tasking the brains of those he argues with simply because his line of reasoning defies all known logic. A person can actually lose IQs by arguing with such a person.

But it's all part of the Internet fun anyway and we can only hope such people find gainful employment so they will no longer have the time to be the insufferable pond-scum that they are.

It's all part of progress.

Serious kini? undecided

This is Nigeria and we have more important issues to tackle.

Someone you've never met before, someone you know absolutely nothing about, threatens you on twitter, and you got so scared, you had to report to the police?
Seriously

That person needs a reality check!

If I ever find my nude pics on a porn site, its my fault, and no one else.
If anyone finds their naked body so fascinating, they can stand in front of a mirror all day and look at their image till they 've had their fill.

That people take naked pics of themselves (without blocking out their faces) and save it on their devices is just beyond me. I can't understand it.

And except you're a teenage, I don't know why bullying should affect a grown man or woman.
