Resident doctors accuse UCH management of mismanagement


The striking Resident Doctors Association, University College Hospital, Ibadan, has accused the management of the institution of wasting several billions of naira allocated to it by the Federal Government as annual subvention.

In a communiqué, read by the President of the association in the UCH, Dr. Lukman Ogunjimi, after the ARD congress held on Tuesday, the doctors alleged that the UCH management had ignored their agitations since they embarked on the on May 1.

The ARD contributes 670 doctors to the hospital’s work force and the strike has since paralysed normal medical services in the hospital with about 1,000 beds empty.

Among several other demands, the doctors are asking the hospital to honour a circular issued by the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation on the welfare of their members and other issues relating to promotion.

In the communiqué, the resident doctors demanded a probe into it the financial activities of the hospital to clarify allegation of mismanagement in the institution.


The document added, “We specifically request that the investigation panel be set up to inquire into the UCH management’s deliberate disregard for the Head of Civil Service of the Federation’s directive on skipping of grade level. The panel should inquire into the continuous disregard of the hospital for the provision of civil service scheme of medical officer’s career path at UCH.

“The panel should also conduct a forensic audit into the misappropriated billions of naira yearly allocated by the FG to the hospital for development and maintenance of structures and personnel.”

Meanwhile, the Chief Medical Director of UCH, Prof. Temitope Alonge, has assured the doctors that issues that could be addressed within the hospital would be looked into.

Alonge refused to commit himself to the issue of skipping of grade level because according to him, the financial implication is not captured in the hospital budget.

People need to know what's going on here.. A lot of needless death of patients, relative and medical colleagues.

Why can't they invite EFCC and ICPC to probe their CMD ?

They can even bring it to the notice of Vice president office and copy office of Senate President, after all he is also a Dr.

Way out of these precarious strikes is privatization of health sector.

Government should hand off from its funding and management.

Thanks for your submission, I perfectly agree with you but poor would suffer if Federal Hospitals are privatized though it would improve the quality of healthcare delivery system .
