Serious financial transactions on campus, including exchange of money for better grades, otherwise known as ‘sorting’, should be done at the bursary department and confirmed with receipts, a University lecturer with the Cross River University of Technology, CRUTECH says.

Mr John Ukam, a member of the Governing Council of Cross River University of Technology, CRUTECH, was speaking at the inauguration ceremony for new Student Union executives of the Faculty of Communication Technology.

“All forms of payments in the institution must be receipted, and must be made through the bursary department. That means, if you want to sort, go to the bursary department,” Mr Ukam stated.

Ukam, a lecturer of mass communication, said CRUTECH’s public identity had been affected by the illicit activities of some lecturers and students of the institution.

Citing a recently published ‘anti corruption’ document, he said CRUTECH was determined to end all activities that will tarnish her image any further.

“Lecturers who sort students, or students who sort lecturers, anyway it’s being done, when caught will leave the institution.

“Class Rep is banned; any student parading himself as a class rep will leave the institution.” He said.

Ukam, who had been presented an award, however advised the new faculty executives to be upright and set good standards in their administration.

CRUTECH has been in the news, recently, with the arrest of a lecturer who allegedly extorted money from students in exchange for academic favours.

The management of the institution, in a release last Monday, also discontinued continuous assessments (CAs) on the grounds that they were avenues for extortion.
