Mr Oyinbo is sharing his first hand experience undergoing the Heart Bypass Surgery in India. He resides in the Ogun State in the South-western Nigerian nation. He came visiting India for his Heart Bypass Surgery facilitated by folks at India4health.

Initially he was suffering from a chest pain, fatigue and as time progressed it became much more severe. He consulted the cardiologist and he did some test on him and then came to the conclusion that he had a blockage in the coronary artery of his heart. The local doctor in Nigeria suggested a bypass surgery as the condition of the blockage was not good.

Heart Bypass Surgery known as the coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) is the surgical treatment for coronary artery disease (CAD). It is a routinely performed and safe procedure for treating Coronary artery disease(CAD). Coronary artery disease is due to the hardening and narrowing(atherosclerosis) of the coronary arteries. Actually the human arteries that bring blood to the cardiac muscle (coronary arteries) can become clogged by plaque (a buildup of fatty tissue, cholesterol and other harmful substances). This can slow or stop oxygen-rich blood to flow through the heart's blood vessels. If this condition is left untreated, this may lead to chest pain and a heart attack.

Coronary Bypass Surgery is a way to treat these blocked heart arteries by creating new passages for blood to flow to your heart muscle. In this surgical process a cardiac surgeon uses a segment of a healthy blood vessel (either an artery or vein) from another part of the body (called
grafts) and uses it to create a detour or bypass around the blocked portion of the coronary artery. As a result, the oxygen enriched blood can flow more freely to nourish the heart muscle. This interventional surgery is usually performed with the heart beat stopped, therefore necessitating the usage of cardiopulmonary bypass; techniques are available to perform CABG on a beating heart, also termed as the, "off-pump" surgery. Depending on the number of blocked coronary arteries, a patient may be advised by the doctor to undergo one, two, three or more bypasses.

They explained him Why the Procedure is needed to be Performed?:-
Coronary arteries are the small blood vessels that supply your heart with oxygen and nutrients that are carried in your blood. It has been observed that when one or more of the coronary arteries becomes partly or totally blocked, heart does not get enough oxygen carrying blood. This is called or better termed as, 'ischemic heart disease' or coronary artery disease. It can cause chest pain (angina). Coronary artery bypass surgery can be used to treat coronary artery disease. Your cardiac specialist or doctor may have tried to treat you with medicines only. You may have also painstakingly tried cardiac rehabilitation. Coronary artery heart disease varies a lot from person to person and case to case. So the way it is diagnosed and treated will also vary. Heart bypass surgery is just one step of treatment. It will be right and appropriate for some people, but others may have to follow another line of treatment.

The doctors suggested and lined him (Mr Oyinbo) up for ByPass Surgery. His surgery was done by expert surgeons and went on to be successful and uneventful. After the operation he had somewhat of a groggy and disoriented feeling but the feeling went away in few days. There was a little pain and discomfort in the sites of incisions that is both the chest and the leg (as his segment of blood vessel was taken from the leg) but Painkillers were administered to relive the discomfort. He was discharged from the hospital within five days. In this period, tests were conducted on him to assess and monitor his condition.

He returned to his home country, Nigeria after few weeks. However to fully recover it took him a few months or more. The diet has to be watched during this recovery. After full recovery, he joined a cardiac rehabilitation program. This program teaches stress management techniques and other important issues like about diet and exercise. This helped to rebuild his strength and confidence. Now one year after his surgery he has got back to his regular routine and exercising.
