So, maybe you've been hearing about gutters and don't know how they affect you... here it is: The appearance and life span of your walls and eventually your house can actually be determined by what you do with rain water pouring down your roofs. Check your roof... do you have a rain gutter installed? Okay, maybe you don't know what exactly it is and what it does. There you go... the information you need on this below. Enjoy.

What is a rain gutter?

A rain gutter is a narrow channel which forms the component of a roof system, collecting and diverting rainwater away from the roof edge. The word ‘gutter’ is derived from Latin ‘gutta’ meaning ‘drop’. Rain gutter is also known as rain catcher, eaves channel, eavestrough, dripster, guttering or simply gutter.

Importance of rain gutters

The main purpose of a rain gutter is to protect a building's foundation by channeling water away from its base.

The gutter also helps to reduce erosion, prevents leaks in basements and crawlspaces, protects painted or stained surfaces by reducing exposure to water, and provides a means to collect rainwater for later use.

What do rain gutters look like?

Rain gutters can be made from a variety of materials such as cast iron, lead, zinc, galvanized steel, painted steel, copper, painted aluminum, PVC (and other plastics), concrete, stone, and wood.

Rain gutters come in different forms. It may be:

An integral part of the roof along the lower edge of its slope and made from same roofing materials.
Metal or other material suspended beyond the roof edge and below the projected slope of the roof.
Wall structure beneath the roof edge, traditionally constructed of brickwork, designed as the crowning element of a wall.
Or a Box gutter which is a deep gutter concealed within the structure of the roof.
Water collected by a rain gutter is fed, usually via a down-pipe from the roof edge to the base of the building where it is either discharged or collected. Water from rain gutters may be collected in a rain barrel or a cistern.

Do they need maintenance?

Clogged gutters can cause water leakage into the building and can lead to stagnant water build up which allows mosquitoes to breed and also allows grasses and weeds to grow in the gutter.

Gutters must be maintained regularly to remove leaves and other debris to keep them from clogging. When filled with debris, they can overflow, soak the foundation, and damage the roof structure.

How are they maintained?

Effective gutter guards that keep debris out but allow water to enter are a good alternative to regular cleaning.

You can protect your rain gutter with the following devices:

-Strainers
-Snap-in metal and plastic gutter guards
-Filtered gutter guards
-Stainless steel gutter guards
-Hinged gutter guards
-Plastic and metal total gutter covers
-Gutter brushes
-Regardless of the gutter guard protection used, all gutter systems should be examined for cleaning and repair twice every year.

Another option is to use a closed gutter to ensure that debris and leaves do not enter the gutter.
