The Port Harcourt Distribution Electric Company (PHEDC) which is in charge of electricity for Cross River state, Akwa Ibom state, Bayelsa state, and Rivers state, have embarked on an indefinite strike with Cross River starting yesterday August 18th, and Rivers starting today August 19th.

The effect of this strike means complete black out for as long as the strike is in effect since all their offices have been shutdown indefinitely.

A correspondent from WATCHDOGNEWS contacted a PHEDC Official in Rivers State called Mr Abiye via telephone.

Mr Abiye confirmed the strike started today and is for an unknown period of time. When asked the reason for the strike, he said that “PHEDC had disengaged a large number of staffs in a short while with no valid reason. He said that Staffs of a department were asked to report to the Zonal office at Moscow road in Port harcourt, they were then handed letters terminating their employments without any form of compensation.”

Speaking further, Mr Abiye said that ever since PHEDC took over, all unions were dissolved and no employees have no where to turn to with the only available option being strike. When asked if he didn’t think that shutting down all offices resulting to a black out was extreme, he said “you people should put yourselves in our shoes”.

We hope that the issue is resolved as soon as possible because of the gruelling effect it will have on the general public.
