Epilepsy is a convulsive attack due to excessive electrical discharge of the brain cells, or is condition of the nervous system that affects the brain. CAUSES There is no clear-cut answer; no one can exactly say the cause of epilepsy but below are some of the pre-disposing factors that can lead to the development of epilepsy. *.A brain injury, such as from a car or bike accident *.An infection or illness that affects the breathing center of the brain, of a developing fetus during pregnancy. *.Lack of oxygen to an infant’s brain during child birth. *.Meningitis, encephalitis or other types of infection that affects the brain. *.Brain tumors or stroke. *.Poisoning, such as lead or alcohol poisoning. FALSE STORY ABOUT EPILEPSY üEpilepsy is not contagious or inherited SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS *.Seizures;- This may be partial or generalized. Partial seizure;-This type of seizure starts in one part of the brain and later, the electrical disturbance will move to the other parts of the brain until the seizure is over. Generalized seizure;-This type of seizure involves electrical disturbance of the entire brain cells at once *.Loss of consciousness *.Twitching of the mouth, several fingers and other parts of the body depending on the area of the brain where the activity is taking place *.Stiffness of the muscles *.Jerking *.Flinging the hand outward *.Suddenly go limp and slump down or fall over. *.Seizures last only a few seconds or minutes. *.Might feel sleepy or confused for hours. *.May not know what happened to him. *.There may be epileptic cry. *.There may be foam from the mouth. TRIGGERING FACTORS *.Flashing or bright light. *.Lack of sleep. *.Stress. *.Over stimulation (like staring at computer screen or video games for too long). *.Hyperventilation (breathing too fast or too deeply). MANAGEMENT *.Stay calm *.Remove victim from possible danger *.Help but do not force the person to lie down. *.Loosen clothing around the neck and other parts of the body. *.Do not hold the person. *.Remove objects, especially sharp or hard ones away. *.Ensure somebody stay with him until seizure is over. *.Observe the event and be able to describe what happened before, during and after seizure. *.Refer to a Neurologist, who will examine and diagnose if the patient is epileptic or not through electroencephalogram (EEG). PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES TAKEN WHEN HANDLING EPILEPTIC PATIENT 1. He should not be permitted to go for swimming alone. 2. He should not be allowed to climb a height. 3. He should avoid fetching water from a well. 4. He should let his friend know about his condition. 5.
