30 Top Memory Improvement Tips

Why the need for memory improvement? For most people keeping a train of thought through a sentence is a major challenge. This doesn’t apply only to senior citizens. We all at one stage or the other suffer from memory loss irrespective of what you do for a living.
A study of normal, healthy adults have shown that to be absent minded is no respecter of age, intelligence or gender. Younger people are easily affected as much as older people are. To make the most out of your memory you need to pay better attention, plan and organize. To kick start this I will be sharing some tips with you that help you sharpen your memory.

1. Learn before bedtime: One of the best ways you can make something stick in your memory is to revise the information before you sleep. There is nothing to interfere with your while you sleep.

2. Increase your lactose intake: about 1000 people were asked to participate in a survey on diets and also take part in a thorough check of their ability to concentrate, memorize and study
Those who consume more dairy products fared better by a higher margin than those who did not.

3. Link the memory with the environment: For instance if an event is studied in the presence of a particular aroma. Then there is a linkage between that event and the aroma prevailing at that particular moment. An example will be an exam, if you visualize the place of study as a cue to the memory it will lead to the linkage that will make memory retention easier.

4. Clench your fist: It has been shown this leads to easy recall of things like numbers e.g phone numbers, shopping list, car number plates etc. At the point of recall you are advised to clench the left fist tightly, the movement is to activate the recall process.

5. Don’t drink last thing at night: Alcohol and memory recall don’t mix well. It disrupts the much needed night rest and the effect on concentration has never been helpful. More drink less sleep.

6. Recite your A B C: The alphabet search method is another useful tip. You can go through the alphabet to find the first name of the person or object you are trying to recall. Doctors have confirm that it really works

7. Do more workouts: Exercise, especially aerobics aids cognitive function of the brain and helps boost memory power. It’s also believed that it helps in the growth of brain cells in the hippocampus, an area of the brain responsible for memory and retention.

9. Stop smoking pot: Marijuana is even worse than cigarettes. It has been shown that teenagers And cannabis too: Adolescents who are regular users of cannabis are at risk of permanent damage to their intelligence, attention span and memory, according to the results of a new long-term study, which followed over 1,000 people from birth to the age of 38.

10. Keep a focus: on the task at hand. A lot of people get caught up in doing so many things at the same time ( multi-tasking), that they often fail to do the one thing that will almost always improve their memory — giving the task at hand priority. This is important, because your brain needs time to encode the information properly. Otherwise if the information ever makes it to your memory, you won’t be able to recall it later. If you need to memorize something, stop multitasking

11. Start Dancing: Music with strong patterns and rhythms are suitable for solving problems and since they are challenging to master so also will the brain be challenged. Research has shown that it could even be beneficial for sufferers of Alzheimer’s disease.

12. Keep it organized: The brain is organized. The books we read has chapters and outlines is a common study aid in schools. All these work in tandem with the brain. Our brains like organization of information. The proper organization of what you want to memorize is essential for easy recall.

13. Be vocal: Memory experts have strongly advised that you say out what you want to remember. This will recall easy. Apply to all your daily activities and everyday objects like where you left your keys etc

14. Connect the dots: Learn by association. Try and link what you have learnt with something that can aid you recall that fact easily. Think about how the associated items are related. When you recall one the other will come. A simple example is onion and light bulb. Both are “bulbs”. This makes your memory stronger. Link new information to information that is already in your memory.

15. You either use it or you lose it: Start a hobby and get involved in activities that stimulate the mind. This can be a powerful aid to memory recall.

16. Chunk It: Don’t take it in as a whole. When given information break it down to chunks that you can easily digest. An 11 digit phone number can be broken down into a set of 4, 4 and 3s for easy assimilation.

17. Cue it: If you have things you do at specific time periods you can cue it for ease of recall. For example say after breakfast I will read my mail. The brain will over time link breakfast and mail together and you will find yourself automatically reaching for your mail as you are rounding on breakfast.

18. Use Visualization: Create a visual image of the things you need to do. If you’re cooking in the kitchen, and remember you need to close the living room window, think of the curtains flapping. Once the vivid association is formed you are advised to do it at once. You no longer have to wonder what brought you to the living room in the first place.

19. Image: The use of imagery as a mnemonic tool does away with the need for words. So a Mike Stonehouse is associated with a stone on his face for better recall. The more bizarre the image the better the recall.

20. Eat chocolate: Eating chocolate can improve your memory, said Oxford University scientists, who tested 2,000 volunteers. Another study found that people taking large amounts of flavonols a compound in chocolate made mental arithmetic easier.

21. Repetition: Constant repetition is a good aid to memory recall but not craming. If you want to remember something keep repeating over and over again. It works for most people. Spread the repetition over a long period of time for it to work better

27. Nature: Pictures of nature can have a beneficial effect on memory. A test has shown that those who walked around the street perform lower on a memory test than those who walked in parks.

28. Sleep well: Lack of sleep affects memory. It increases the formation of beta amyloid, the toxic protein that clogs the brain according to a study in the Journal science. Inadequate sleep delays memory storage activities and make us forget sooner than later.

29. Smell, touch, taste, hear and see it: The more senses you use when you need to encode memory, the stronger the memory is. That’s why the smell of home-baked bread can still be recalled as fresh as though it’s being baked now. Have a need to remember someone’s name you met for the first time? It may help to look them in the eye when you repeat their name, and offer a handshake. By doing so, you’ve engaged 4 out of your 5 senses.

30. Learn it the way that works for you: People often get caught up in thinking there’s a “one size fits all” learning style for memorizing new material. That’s not true — different people use different ways for taking in new information. Use the style that works for you, even if it’s not the way most people study or try and learn new information. For instance, some people like to write things down when they’re learning something new. Others may benefit more from recording what they’re hearing, and going back to take more detailed notes later on at their own leisure. When you faithfully apply these memory improvement tips you see a boost in your capacity to retain information
