Two years ago, several pictures went viral. No, not Kaz’s nude photos. They were photos of a popular televangelist’s palatial residence. The house, built in the lush green fields of Runda looked every bit the palace, complete with an outdoor swimming pool, a lawn and an outdoor gazebo that is easily what some people call home. The pastor in question was also said to be driving a top-of the Range SUV, and basically living the life of a Saudi Prince. In a newspaper interview on a day before Valentine’s Day about two years ago, the couple posed in their expensive Harley Davidson bikes. They were looking all lovey dovey as they narrated how they race against each other in their bikes. Never mind a second hand Harley Davidson bike retails for nothing less than Sh 1 Million.

How times have changed! Pastors are no longer the broke Men of God who drove old, smoky rickety, jalopies. They are no longer the sweat-smelling men who would walk miles from home to home, praying for the sick, braving the swelting January heat and harsh chilly July weather. They are no longer the humble men of God who who exuded utter patience with their flock, praying reverently for them, without expecting anything in return. Pastor’s homes are no longer the refuge for stranded flock who would walk in unannounced for a free meal or a place to crash for a night or two. They are heavily guarded mansions deemed ‘no-go-zones’ for anyone without an invite.

Pastor today are little kings with cronies who worship the ground they walk on; living in little kingdoms where nobody can dare question their word. Their homes- palatial homes are big enough to be churches, their cars can be sold to educate 100 children for a whole year and their salaries can feed six families for an entire year. Their children drive the latest cars, shop with credit cards and hang out in the best restaurants in town. They also study abroad, because even the most expensive local schools are too cheap for them. Their wives are little queens with numerous servants at their beck and call. Being pastor’s wife is no longer the calling it used to be, but a title. A title to be revered and worshipped. They wine and dine in exclusive golf clubs in the city, catch them dead sharing a meal you normal people who bankroll their lives.

At this point, I would like to remind you about Jesus. Jesus, as we know Him, was the meek Messiah born in a manger, raised in a carpenter’s household, walked with 12 normal chaps and rode on a borrowed donkey on his last journey to Jerusalem. He was a humble bloke who loved to hang out with children, prostitutes, failures, widows and lepers. He walked miles to preach the Gospel, multiplied fish and bread for his flock and ate after everyone had eaten to their fill.

Forget the fact that he was the Son of the Most High; this bloke called Jesus would go for holiday in the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights without food, praying, fasting and connecting with his maker. When this guy Jesus was about to die and then ascend to heaven, he gave his disciples an assignment. He told the ‘Go ye!” (Mark 16:15) which says: “And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” The idea was for His disciples to follow in the footsteps of Christ, to preach the word of God, heal the sick, and exorcise demons until their time on earth is done. Their duty was simple but tough, to be fishers of men, and lead the flock to Christ.

But what did they do? They started well, I won’t lie. Until they discovered that the flock was not only lost, but desperate as well. Then they began taking advantage of the flock. Asking them to pay for prayers, taxing them for healing miracles. They forgot their summum bonum (their highest good, their best example) Jesus Christ and started to love the world and its trappings.

I daresay pastors, bishops, apostles…anyone who purports to be a Man of the Cloth should not and must not live a life of luxury and extravagance. If your Pastor is the kind that lives the life of a Saudi Prince, then you, my friend are in the wrong church. If securing an appointment with your pastor will take longer than securing an appointment with the president, then you should leave that church. Oh, and if you fear your pastor more than you fear God, then why are we even having this conversation?

If these men of God, who cannot wine and dine with their flock, but have lunch at exclusive clubs with God knows who, are truly men of God, then they should follow the example of Christ to the letter. The hallmark of Christ’s ministry was humility and modesty. I mean, Christ was the Son of the God. He would have chosen to be born in a palace rather than a manger. He would have chosen 12 princes rather than 12 normal chaps to be his disciples. He would have smacked hard the prostitutes that came to him, but he loved them and accepted them and told them their sins were forgiven. Heck, he would have wined and dined with the kings and not waste time with normal people who cannot buy enough wine at their weddings! He would have used chariots instead of a borrowed donkey on his journey to Jerusalem. Think of it, if Jesus had a dollar for every miracle he performed, how rich would he be? But guess what, He did not!

Why? Because ministry is not about an individual, but about the Gospel. It is not about lavish lifestyles, choppers, ranger rover sports, palatial Runda home and limousines (Wake up, Prophet Owuor) but about the Gospel. It’s impact. The people who accept Christ. The sick healed. Children prayed for. The blind who see for the first time. The criminals who change their ways. The prostitutes who return to their first love (not you, Pst Njoroge). The people delivered. It is not about the money (Wake up, Pastor Kanyari), it is about the love. The solace. The healing.

So next time you are in church and your pastor boasts how he was on holiday in London with his wife, ask him how he feels about fasting for 40 days and 40 nights.

I dont like people telling others how to live. pastor goes around begging, you complain, pastor is rich and has a comfortable life, you complain. When will people learn to start minding their business? How a pastor decides to spent his money is not your business. Make your own and spend it the way you want. Simple. Pastors are not the reason africa is poor, the govts are. Channel your anger to the govts and leave the pastors to live in peace.

Why don't worshippers demand to see the financial books of the Church and see where the money is going, the tithes and offerings are for soul-winning not for pastors to get rich on

What a wonderfully written article though I will not advocate for preachers of the gospel to go around smelling without practising good personal hygiene cheesy

But the truth is that the majority of these so called MOG aka pastors are after the people because of their $$$$.

Wait for their money loving supporters to start supporting this gross evil and wickedness.

The hypocrites keep promising the reward of heaven to their poor followers on earth while making a paradise for themselves on earth, hypocrites !!

They should do what Jesus commanded, sell all their loot wealth and distribute the money to the poor of their congregations.

Good writeup @op,the truth is that pastors nd preachers of this age have missed it,but they still bring up reasons to justify their extravagant lifestyle for them to continue deceiving the flocks of Christ. No wonder Jesus told peter "loveth me more than these"three good times he asked peter that almost got him iritated, and jesus said "FEED MY LAMBS".Now the question is:Are the preachers of today really feeding the flocks or have they abandoned the flocks and turned their belly? May GOD help us.

There is every reason to be concerned when only the pastas are getting filthy rich by the day. This is charity mullah for heaven sake!

Take youur church Negro,
Tell us how much your church burns on your pasta vis a vis how much they burn on charity

This concept of superstars is totally foreign and under 100 years young. They will tell you it's a 'new' revelation but it aint.

Holy Spirit spoke about it 1900 years ago

2 Peter 2:3 King James Version (KJV)
3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

And long before this, Jesus said you should give what you have received freely

You can bet the richer they be, the less charity they engage in.

Paul aggressively collected charity yet when it came to his own rights as a minister, he forfeited this.

Am looking for that minister who works so as not to burden others. They are as rare as a Taliban US President

Actually, the richer them pastas, the more opaque they get. They fear the truth more than hell itself because it would liberate their sheeple

The last place you want to look for a genuine example of prosperity gospel results is in a pasta. Them negroes prosper off your seed whether you reap or not. And worse, they don't have to wait seed-time/harvest-time nonsense coz they reap instantly! grin

There are equally many satanists and pagans who have prospered immensely without ever hearing about seed nonsense. It's all probabilities Negro. Out of a pool of say 200 needy suckaz, a few will get out of the rut.

Jesus commanded us to do charity. Cornelius was heard for charity among others. Maybe you should write to Him and advise him to 'correct' scriptures because we now have social security cool

Whether they are into charity or not, living like a p!mp off poor negroes' sweat is blasphemous

Whose precedence are they following? Certainly not Jesus' nor the apostles or ANYBODY for that matter for over 1900 years of Christianity.

Every member of my church has access to the financial details of the church, we usually have annual account and general meeting. so many churches have theirs too. there Is sooo much you dont know and ur bias wont allow you humble urself and learn. How many preachers are in fact living in affluence? Do you know how many pastors there are all over the world? You pick up on a tiny few and run around screaming and labelling. Do you know that many pastors basically run their church with what they earn from secular jobs? What about those that are posted to villages?

By the way, how many souls have you won? How many times do you deny yourself food for days because you are groaning in prayer for people who are in their homes eating? How many times do you deny yourself sleep to pray for others through the night? How many times do you leave the comfort of your room and go to church to pass the night praying for others?

Critics who do nothing in GOD'S house! Go to bed!

Tell them Sir,

They don't know the sacrifices those pastors have made, but instead they just sit down at home watch TV, go to cinemas and think they can criticize pastors because God has blessed those pastors with money.

Hypocrites abound.
