Some Habits That Will Never Be Fully Accepted In Nigeria by Nobody: 6:25pm On Sep 11, 2015
Two popular and contradicting sayings are, “Never judge a book by its cover” and “First impression matters most”. Here in Nigeria, the latter applies more as majority of Nigerians will always judge a person based on their appearance, most people are not interested in the book but just the cover. A person with any of these habits that will be discussed soon is immediately tagged dangerous or wayward.

No matter how good you look or greatly you have combined your outfit also, some will not just fly here in Nigeria, they will always look strange and draw some distasteful stares and terrible side comments, some intentionally loud enough for you to hear as you walk by.

Though Nigerians are fast imbibing the western culture, there are still some habits that may never be fully accepted by the society. Habits like:

Wearing Boots, Bum shots, Panty hose or Bikini
Generally Boots are designed for extremely cold weather, though they are highly fashionable and add class to one’s dressing, they will always look out of place if worn in Nigeria even if the weather is extremely cold.

Let the weather be extremely hot, bum shots are just regarded by many Nigerians as out of place, except you are someone who loves attention and don’t give a hoot about terrible comments and stares you may get, then you may be able to survive a day in public on bum shots without getting irritated.

Though panty hose are not revealing, but rather with the aim to cover up legs, you will always get stares with some people wondering what planet you are from.

Bikini, this is one major swim wear that has raised some questions like, if you would not go about in your underwear, why then should you wear a bikini? Many Nigerians believe because it is tagged a “bikini” does not justify it’s not an underwear.

Smoking
If he or she smokes, then that’s a sign of waywardness and often times the person is thought as dangerous. Maybe a lot of movies have affected Nigerians mentality, because Nollywood or Hollywood would often portray dangerous and wayward people through many of these habits listed here. But then, smoking habits is still a practice that many Nigerians use to judge a person’s character.

Men on Earrings or Weaves
The first thing that comes to the mind of many Nigerians when they see men or weaves or earrings is “irresponsible” – you are either thought of as a flirt, fraudster or someone with a nasty behaviour.

Tattoos and Piercings
Though many Nigerian youths (and some grownups too) today are drawing tattoos here are there, such acts are not widely acceptable, comments like “Would you purposely scratch a Bentley?” and other talks are viral, especially amongst people who shun tattoos.
Also, having piercings for jewelries in strange places or even more than a pierce on the earlobes is often seen as inappropriate.

Swearing
Swear words like “Bleep” or “shit” will always be strange to some Nigerians, many even regard it as a result of high consumption of western movies and imitation of the westerners.

Public Display of Affection
The only time you will get a chance at this without criticism is on your wedding day, except from that day, if caught in the act of any overly PDA, you will be surprised of how viral your pictures can go with a lot of hilarious and heavy criticism.

It is true that first impression matters most and you are addressed by the way you dress, but should that really be a basis to judge a person’s character? Can you hold a conversation comfortably with someone you are meeting for the first time that exhibits any of these habits?
What is your take on this? Also feel free to add more habits you know about in the comment box below.
