......okay let's begin with the basics of probability .....
we know the general formula takes the form of ;
probability of an event=number of required ÷ total number of outcomes
mathematically given as
P=Nr/Np

back to the question
analysis :
1:we have six letters (total number of outcomes)
2:If a letter is picked what's the probability of picking a certain letter (Every letter has an equal chance of being picked,its like rolling a die,......since no parameters was stated e.g 3black letters, 2 white and one blue ......we safely assume that a letter =anyother letter )
3:since there are six letters, the probability is 1/6 using the formula
You can also imagine it as picking an apple from a bowl of six apples,the probability of picking a single apple is the same for any other apple since each apple has been assumed to be the same....
if the question was like this
they are 3 blue letters,2white letters and 1 pink letter, what is the probability of picking a blue letter; our approach would have been different.

differentiating Y wrt to u,we will have
dy/du=-sinu

Pick the school for first choice, the school does not consider second choice at all, plus I think it's impossible to fill it as second choice
