At last, I get to do this. I have always been a fan of BMW expecially the e36 series. Why? Apart from being a design that enjoyed high commercial success spanning over 9 years, it was its success that the next model e46 rode on.

Despite having used a 1993 BMW 318i saloon as my first 'bought' car which I still own, I always had the hots for the coupe version. I always gawk when I see one and hoped for it but as a struggling young bobo, the money to get a foreign used one wasn't there, expecially as I had some other cars to maintain so I was out for a cheap alternative, possibly a clean Nigerian used example that wont break the bank.

Try hard as it may, this particular model design has been difficult to come by. First as Nigerians do not take to BMW as a real favourite and then how many Nigerians actually fall in the category of using a coupe? Well, I searched Olx, Nairaland, efritin etc and even roamed the street before bumping on this.

https://www.nairaland.com/2543677/sold-bmw-coupe-e36-99

I weighed my options and eventually opted for it. I must state that I have gone through quite an experience to get this as I had to fly down and then drive this car all the way form Uyo to Kaduna. No be small matter. The journey took me 3 full days, juggling unknown villages, getting heavy grease stains, lots of pushing and spending nights on the roadside; something I've never had cause to do nor ever want to try again. The car broke down 4 good times enroute and had a minor incident along the way. Gladly though, I made to Kaduna 8:30am this morning after riding on 80km/hr for 636km. cry

Attached are some pictures for reference

1. My Sedan e36 back
2. Sedan 36 front
2. The coupe after collection
3. The coupe enroute at the filling station

Let the story begin...

Okay, so I'm finally in Kaduna. I headed straight to the mechanic's workshop to drop her. I've suffered enough embarassment from Japanese cars and drivers on my way and I can't wait to tune this baby up. Right from the get go, I had a budget set up. I'm not prepared to spend beyond a certain amount on her, at least for the time being.

I ran a quick assessment of the repairs to be carried out to bring her to normal driving conditions. Please note that this assessment was carried out before actual purchase of vehicle but a myriad of issues developed on the way. First, the faults in no particular order

1. After asking a partner to help check the car 'statistics' before take off, he checked but forgot to lock in the bonnet. As soon as we got on the freeway, next thing was the bonnet flipping back on high speed and smashing into the windshield-

- Badly cracked windshield
- Twisted hood

2. Still enroute, gear selector fell out and car won't disengage from Gear 4. Pushed on until we arrived at a narrow, rough hilly part of the road and had to work some DIY magic

- Bad gear selector

3. Fuel pump totalled due to some kangaroo work done earlier
4. Faulty Wipers: this particularly made me suffer
5. Ugly door panels
6. Bad hind suspension system , vibrates loudly around 80 km/h
7. Noisy and bad clutch release bearings
8. Headlamps and pointers are out
9. Broken AC vents
10. Screwed stereo: Needs manual support to work
11. Slick tires
12. Bad fuel guage (made me sleep overnight in a unknown village)
13. No reverse light
14. No horn
15. Engine in desperate need of servicing
16. Leaking Silencer (I couldnt hear myself think with this)
17. No handbrakes
18. Kick starter went kaput (I pushed like hell in traffic jams)
19. Instrument cluster won't light up
20. Rusty trunk lock
21. Trunk light missing
22. Tail lights wont just come on

Thats all I can remember now.

To be honest, this is what ruins a man who goes all-in hoping to get a ride to start life,

The whole problems will make him think the car is demonic. The seller could have done well to have listed at least half the issues, good thing he was hospitable tho.

I really admire your courage. I've seen what Siena has been doing, and I am looking to rearrange a Siena too.

Oya kontinu! Give me liver.

Sorry I've not given progress reports. I've tried posting the past coup,e days but the posts don't come through, network maybe.
Rainfall has been a strong factor of delay as we've had rainfall everyday since I got back. Woke has also not enabled me take pictures as I'ld love to but I'll share nonetheless.

First some pictures on some needed changes

1. Cracked windshield (to be replaced)
2. Boot trunk lock (welded already)

Now my posts are going through, more pictures cheesy

1. Battered bonnet
2. Slick tired
3. General front view

Now a project without a vision is dead on arrival, this picture below is what I'm working towards with this baby. I'm considering changing the colour to white but I'm against changing the base colour of the car. No doubt though, after some panel beating work done, some painting is definitely required.

The project is estimated to take just about 4 days but there's being some sort of delay. Technicians and the weather all have a part to play in that.

Work started the very same day car rolled in.

1. Hood removed and straightened.
2. The electrical works are being looked into as we speak

And you said you have only a cetain amount of cash to spend for now? Bro...to restore this ride is for people drowning in cash.i suggest you write this one off as a bad buy....keep it as a source for spares...and save to buy another but tok. You have no idea what it takes to maintain a BMW....much less to restore one that been so messed up by owner and mechanics. And your guy that forgot or didn't know to lock the hood.... God be with you if he is the one that knows more about cars...or you took him along for his pushing muscles? Whatever....this would be interesting....very interesting.

I admire restoration projects, but...

...personally, I feel this E36 is too far gone. That boot lid does not need welding, it needs replacement, way too much rust. The same goes for the hood - there was a ton of filler to begin with, there's going to be loads more.

The finish of the paintwork suggests it's been painted in the past, and badly too. More filler in the doors and fenders. Then add the long list of other items that require attention, and you have a car that's ripe for a part-out.

I could understand if this was a desirable or rare model, or even a high-spec car. But it's not. It's a base model E36 Beemer, the E36 was not a particularly successful model, and yes, that includes the M3. Admittedly, the iconic E30 was a hard act to follow.

The only way this will be even remotely worth saving, would be if parts were replaced, and this was a ground up restoration to factory, as new condition. Cut corners, or fix this up on the cheap, and you end up with a car that is mediocre and sub-standard, making you ask yourself the age-old question at the end:

Was it worth it? Especially when you see mint examples around, with others for sale for less than yours cost you.

Another aspect that caught my attention - 4 days turnaround? Really? I'm a certified automotive tech, with a fully-equipped workshop at my disposal, and I can assure you the bodywork alone (even just the visibly damaged areas) will take the best part of 2 weeks or more. The whole project (going by your list)? Estimate 5-7 weeks, unless you're just "papering over the cracks". Because one thing that the E36 was notorious for was rust, and as work progresses, more will be found. Boot lid, rear arches, lower doors, front wings, leading edge of bonnet, sill panels being prime areas of rot.

I'm not trying to put you off, just letting you know what you're up against. I tell it like it is.

Good luck!

Thanks for taking out one to view this thread. Considering how far I've gone with this I'll say it's a little too late to go back. Having owned the same model previously I have at least the slightest idea of how to manage this one. My companion was a driver too, just. Seat back and do check on the thread from time to time.

Thanks

Thanks sir for your lucid post. I had an idea of what I'm against full time and your post has done more to justify that thought.

This car was acquired not for the purpose of a daily runner or special classic, it's a ride I intend to take out occasionally when off work or on weekends. It's not an ace and definitely it will be replaced in the near future so I don't intend sinking heavy capital into it. In the end, I still think it'll be worth the thrill I desired.

Yes, four days was totally off mark but the estimation was made based on the manpower dedicated to its repairs. It's 2 weeks gone already but there's light at the end of the tunnel already.

Once again, thanks for registering your thoughts. They are appreciated
