In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear Muslim brothers and sisters, may you have a happy and blessed `Eid! We whole-heartedly implore Allah to please our hearts with the long-waited victory of Islam and the spread of its message all over the world.

`Eid, in Islam, is a day of joy, thanksgiving, worship, brotherhood, solidarity, and morality. A Muslim should take the advantage of this day to bring himself nearer to Allah, Most High.

We’d like to cite the following comprehensive fatwa issued by Sheikh M. S. Al-Munajjid, a prominent Saudi Islamic lecturer and author:

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Every nation has its festival, and this is your festival.” Here, he referred to the fact that these two `Eids are exclusively for the Muslims.

The Muslims have no festivals apart from `Eidul-Fitr and `Eidul-Adha. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Al-Madinah, the people of Madinah used to have two festivals. On those two days they had carnivals and festivity. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) asked the Ansar (the Muslims of Madinah) about it.

They replied that before Islam they used to have carnivals on those two joyous days. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) told them, “Instead of those two days, Allah has appointed two other days which are better, the days of `Eidul-Fitr and `Eidul-Adha.” (Abu Dawud)

These two `Eids are among the signs of Allah, to which we must show consideration and understand their objectives. Below, we will elaborate the rulings and etiquette of `Eid.

Rulings of `Eid

1. Fasting: It is haram to fast on the days of `Eid because of the hadith of AbuSa`id Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) in which he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade fasting on the day of Fitr and the day of Adha. (Muslim)

2. Offering `Eid Prayers: Some of the scholars say that `Eid Prayers are Wajib(obligatory) – this is the view of the Hanafi scholars and of Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah. Some scholars say that `Eid Prayer is Fard Kifayah (a communal duty, binding on the Muslims as a group, and it is fulfilled if a sufficient number of people perform it, thereby absolving the rest of sin). This is the view of the Hanbalis. A third group says that `Eid Prayer is Sunnah Mu’akkadah. This is the view of the Malikis and Shafi`is.

3. Offering Supererogatory Prayers: There are no Supererogatory Prayers to be offered either before or after the `Eid Prayer, as Ibn `Abbas reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to come out on the day of `Eidand pray two rak`ahs, with nothing before or after them. This is the case if the Prayer is offered in an open area. If, however, the people pray the `Eid Prayer in a mosque, then they should pray two Rak`ahs for Tahiyat Al-Masjid.

4. Women attending the `Eid Prayers: According to the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) everyone is urged to attend `Eid Prayer, and to co-operate with one another in righteousness and piety. The menstruating woman should not forsake the remembrance of Allah or places of goodness such as gatherings for the purpose of seeking knowledge and remembering Allah – apart from mosques. Women, undoubtedly, should not go out without the Hijab.

Etiquette of `Eid

1. Ghusl (taking a bath): One of the good manners of `Eid is to take bath before going out to the Prayer. It was reported that Sa`id ibn Jubayr said: “Three things are Sunnah on `Eid: to walk (to the prayer-place), to take a bath, and to eat before coming out (if it’s `Eidul-Fitr).”

2. Eating before coming out: One should not come out to the prayer-place on`Eidul-Fitr before eating some dates, because of the hadith narrated by Al-Bukhari from Anas ibn Malik who said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would not go out in the morning of `Eidul-Fitr until he had eaten some dates… and he would eat an odd number.” On `Eidul-Adha, on the other hand, it is mustahab (recommended) not to eat until after the Prayer, when one should eat from the meat of one’s sacrifice.

3. Takbir on the day of `Eid: This is one of the greatest Sunnahs of this day. Al-Daraqutni and others reported that when Ibn `Umar came out on `Eidul-Fitrand`Eidul-Adha, he would strive hard in making Takbir until he reached the prayer-place, then he would continue making Takbir until the Imam came.

4. Congratulating one another: People may exchange congratulations and good greetings on `Eid, no matter what form the words take. For example they may say to one another, “Taqabbal Allahu minnaa wa minkum (may Allah accept from us and from you our good deeds!)”. Jubayr ibn Nufayr said: “At the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when people met one another on the day of `Eid, they would say, ‘Taqabbal Allahu minnaa wa minka.’” (Ibn Hajar)

5. Wearing one’s best clothes for `Eid: Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a Jubbah (cloak) that he would wear on `Eid and on Fridays.” Al-Bayhaqi reported that Ibn `Umar used to wear his best clothes on `Eid, so men should wear the best clothes they have when they go out for `Eid.

6. Changing route on returning from Prayer-place: Jabir ibn `Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to change his routes on the day of `Eid. (Al-Bukhari)

Salam alaykum

Today is yaom al Arafah. Alhamdulillah. What a blessed day. I hope you are fasting.

Tomorrow is eid mashaAllah!!!!!!!!!!. I know I don’t have to peep in to know you have beautiful things in those boxes, wrappers, bags, or wardrobe- all for tomorrow!!!!!!. Tomorrow is gonna be a great day, it would be fun filled InshaAllah. Awaiting it gives so much joy, so much hope. hmmmmn You really are Lucky if you are with your family. Oops! Oh! Or is there someone who is so far away from any kind of family ?? Cheer up! Its all good and it is the way Allah wishes it to be! No matter how its gonna be, something common to all of us is the blessings of Allah which we all are lucky to be having. For sparing our lives till this moment, We are thankful to Him.

-The takbeer during the first raka’ah is seven and five for the second rakaah. If you miss any of them, you don’t have to say them back(they are not compulsory aspects of the prayer)

– if you miss the whole prayer, you can have your own.

-many people make the mistake of observing nafila when they get to the prayer ground. That is wrong. The eid prayer itself is a nafilah and so you don’t need to say another one. But, if the prayers is taking place inside a mosque, you can observe tahiyat al masjid(the two rakaah nafila that is observed whenever one enters a mosque).

To take a bath– for God’s Sake, it is a day of festivity, Everyone should be clean. Purity is emphasized in Islam and on a day like this, further emphasized. It is okay to just have a bath. But better to have a ghusl(ritual bath) too.
Here, I need the attention of all. This is how the prophet taught it, Unlike what many of us, especially Nigerians are used to.

Allahu Akbaru llahu Akbar
LaillahaillaAllahu Allahu Akbar

Allahu Akbar walillahi l hamd.

In case you know of the additions, Allahu akbaru kabira wal hamdulillah kathira wasubhanallahi bukrata wa asila… desist from saying them. Even though they are good wordings, there is no proof(except you provide one) for these statements as regards eid and Allah knows best.

To walk walk to the mosque– encouraged.
To take a different route– to take a route different from the one we took to the masjid.

We are to shake one another. Even people you never knew, on the day of eid. We are enjoined to say good words to one another. These are permissible in our local dialects too. But from the life of the prophet, we learn of this
Taqabalallahu minna wa minkum.( may allah accept it from us and from you)

Other forms of greeting on Eid day are-

A ku odun A ku iyedun. Emi a se pupo e (Yoruba)

Kulu ‘am wa antum bikhayr(may you be well all through the year)

kulu sana wa antum toyyibeen

Eid Mubarak(Arabic)

Are cutting hair, shaving, and cutting nails also part of the sunnah's of eid?
Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said,
"If one of you intends to sacrifice an animal on the day of `Eid al-Adha, then he or she should stop cutting the hair and the nails."
Imam Malik, Imam Ahmad, and Imam Shafi`i (in one of his opinions) strictly follow this hadith and forbid cutting the nail or hair during the first 10 days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah.

The Hanafi School declares it as Sunnah Mu'akkadah (Arabic for: confirmed sunnah) and highly recommends that a Muslim holds off cutting the nail and hair and to do so after sacrificing the animal, so that the hair and the nails are counted as hasanat (Arabic for: good deeds) along with the hair of the sacrificial animal. It is not haram to cut the hair or the nails; but it is recommended to achieve additional rewards for good deeds.

Allah Almighty knows best.
