Fruits are an important part of a healthy diet. They are naturally low in calories, fat, sodium, and cholesterol. Above all, fruits play an important role in keeping your body healthy. They do not only nourish your body, they also help you get through the day; making you look and feel your best- your posture, your teeth, nails, skin, hair and your whole body in general.

Here are some of the health benefits of eating fruits…

Fights Toxins and Prevents Diseases

Fruit are a good source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants; they play a major role in preventing vitamin C and vitamin A deficiencies. People who eat fruit as part of an overall healthy diet generally have a reduced risk of chronic diseases. Remember the saying: ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’. Medical experts advise that you should make half your plate of food, fruits and vegetables for healthy eating.

Keeps Your Hair Healthy

Eating fruits rich in vitamin C helps keep your hair strong. Protein makes up the structure of your hair shaft. Some proteins like melanin, help maintain your hair colour, while others, like collagen, keep your hair resistant to breakage. Vitamin C helps support healthy collagen production, so foods rich in the nutrient help keep your hair in good condition. Since most fruits contain vitamin C, almost any fruit you choose will help you reach your vitamin C requirements; 75 or 90 milligrams daily for women and men. Strawberries, oranges and grapefruits have particularly rich sources of vitamin C so enjoy their richness for a healthy hair.

Fruits Keep the Bowel Regular

Fruits are rich in fibre, which is essential for the smooth movement of food in the body’s digestive system. Fruits help maintain easy bowel action and eating fruits every day will prevent constipation. In a place like Nigeria where most major foods have high carbohydrate content, you need to compliment your meal with fruits or vegetables. Fruit provide many nutrients, including potassium, fibre, vitamin C and folate (folic acid).
