Nwankwo Kanu
Just as his football career was about to pick up
in 1993, after a wonderful performance at the
U-17 World Championships, Kanu Nwankwo was
diagnosed of suffering from a heart related
ailment which many football lovers thought
would cut shot his dream of becoming a
superstar.
But miraculously, he survived the surgeon’s
knife and today he is one of the influential
footballers of all time. The retired footballer
fondly called Papilo today sits atop a
multibillion business empire. With the bulk of it
in real estate and the hospitality industry, he is
also a philanthropist especially with his Kanu
Heart Foundation which caters for children with
heart related ailments.
The former Footballer of the Year and UNICEF
ambassador was the captain of the Nigerian
national team for 16 years. He has won a UEFA
Champions League medal, a UEFA Cup medal,
three FA Cup Winners Medals, and two African
Player of the Year awards among others. He is
also one of the few players who have won the
Premiere League, FA Cup, Champions League,
UEFA Cup and an Olympic Gold Medal. Nwankwo
has a lot of properties scattered across the
country especially in Lagos and Owerri.
It was gathered that the player owns a mansion
located at Opebi and his multi million naira
Hardley Suite in Victoria Island aside his photo
shop on Allen Avenue and three mansions in
Parkview, Ikoyi, Lagos . Although, he recently
lost about N1.4b to fraudsters, he however
pockets N2m daily as profit from his hotel
business.
Though much is not known about his
investments abroad but he is a major share
holder in big Nigerian companies even as he
pockets millions from endorsement contracts
from corporate giants such as Peak Milk, Airtel,
among others. He is estimated to be worth in
cash and assets to the tune of N19b.
