Ethnic Crisis Brewing Between Yoruba, Igbos in Akure

19 Oct 2015

Ethnic crisis is brewing between indigenes of Akure, the Ondo State capital and Igbo traders in the ancient town.

Already, a cold war has broken out between the traditional ruler of Akureland, Oba Ogunlade Aladetoyinbo and the Eze Ndigbo, Mr. Gregory Iloehika, over some alleged un omplimentary remarks by the latter.

The Akure Council of Chiefs, that had reported the Eze Ndigbo to the state government and the police command, alleged that the leader of the Igbos dis-respected the stool of the Deji of Akureland.

According to findings, the state government and the state Police Commissioner, Mike Ogudu, had separately invited Iloehika to get explanation on the matter.

THISDAY gathered that the Eze was invited by the Deji of Akureland over leadership tussle between the Igbos and Yoruba in Mojere market in Akure metropolis and the beating of some chiefs sent by the Oba to mediate in the crisis.

The Eze Ndigbo was said to have uttered some rude remarks while addressing the Deji and some aides to the Oba were said to have walked him out of the palace.

He was alleged to have been manhandled and questioned why he was equating himself to a traditional ruler.

Consequently, the Igbos in the town in support of their leaders, closed their shops for three days to protest the treatment meted out on their leader.

But the spokesman of the Akure Council of Chief, who is the Asamo of Akureland, Chief Rotimi Olusanya, weekend in a statement, appealed to all indigenes and residents of the town to go about their lawful duties.
Olusanya advised the traders to open their shops and market their wares.

According to him, “Akure is reputed to be peaceful, law-abiding and accommodating. We will continue to allow integration of all Nigerians but we will not allow anyone to degrade nor trample upon our tradition and institutions.
“The Deji of Akure is the only paramount Oba in Akure kingdom all indigenes and inhabitants in Akureland are his subjects.
“That Akure people are peace-loving and promoters of good and cordial relationship among all Nigerian residents in our fatherland. We do not discriminate between indigenes and visitors in Akure.

“That the recent incidence with the Eze Ndigbo, Iloehika, was as a result of high disregard for Akure people and our Kabiyesi by Iloehika.

Iloehika, had been invited on Sunday, October 11, 2015 as an Igbo elder to intervene in the crisis brewing among traders at Mojere Market wherein the Igbo marketers were accused to have acted in contravention of the rules guiding all occupiers of the market.

Olusanya said the Eze Ndigbo “uttered some uncomplimentary words such as ‘your people caused the problem,’ ‘King Solomon had advisers, I can only advise you and if you like it you take it and if you don’t like it you don’t take it’.”

He said the Igbo leader was also while addressing the Oba “was busy taking calls on his cell phone while speaking with Kabiyesi. This the Akure people and kabiyesi considered as an affront.

Reacting to the development, an Igbo leader, Emma George of the Centre for the Defence of Igbo, said that the matter would soon be resolved.

George said that talks were in progress to settle the misunderstanding.

It is inferiority complex to want to justapose king Solomon with king of Akure on this issue. The need is to establish peace and prosperity, not crisis and competition.

Eze igbo or whatever should not become a parrallel king to the Akure monarch without the peoples consent. Had they met a poor hostile people, would they flourish?

People should look for men of fair character to lead them in complex society, not one that must excert bad pride that they must be percieved as reputed.

Not every igbo wants to be so reputed on 'bad pride'. Not many Yoruba wants to be marked as persecutor of anyone.

lol.... an ethnic crisis between Yorubas who probably make up more than 90% of Akure, and Igbos who probably make up less than 5% ??
Where is the wisdom in that? Just plain suicidal.

This wouldn't be an ethnic crisis. It would be a massacre or perhaps an "ethnic cleansing". How can they be ethnic crisis in a land which is almost 100% dominated by the Yorubas?

Deji of Akure raises issues with Igbo on culture

OCTOBER 19, 2015

DEJI of Akure, Oba Ogunlade Aladetoyinbo has accused Igbo residing in the city of alleged insubordination to his authority, just as he accused them of violating the people’s traditions.

Besides, the first-class traditional ruler alleged that the Igbo residing in the city have no respect for him and the culture of the city.

He alleged that Igbo traders in the city often violate the culture and tradition of Akureland while discharging their duties, stressing that efforts to caution them have failed.

Apparently worried by the alleged violation of his order by some Igbo traders in the city, the Deji, who spoke through the Asamo of Akureland, Chief Rotimi Olusanya alleged that the Eze Ndigbo of Ondo state, Sir Gregory Ilehohika recently embarrassed him and some of his chiefs inside his palace.

Reacting, President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Ondo State, Chief Okechukwu Okorie said the Igbo living in the state are law-abiding and peaceful, adding that the Igbo respect their traditions and those of other tribes.

He said the Igbo leaders who went to the palace of Deji of Akure to honour his invitation were beaten by some irate youths numbering over 200 at the palace.

He said the Deji was being misinformed by some individuals on the activities of Igbo people in Akure and the state at large.

The igbos in akure are way too nice to that savage tribe. Nonsense. When that worthless tribe destroyed Onitsha main bridge with their useless, fake medicine shops while ignoring a 3 years old government request to move to a real market in Onitsha, did Onitsha ppl act like savages? Did Onitsha scream at them to respect their land? When one of their own carried his fat @ss to Enugu and gave out Enugu land to those of them living in Enugu while they demanded for that free land and more free sh1ts in Enugu after the government took it back.. did Enugu ppl act like savages.
I swear the Igbo's are too damn nice to that undeveloped neanderthal savages. Igbo should take a lesson from hausa and fulani. Beat the luving sh1t out of them like hausa does in their land or kidnapped and kill them like the fulani does. Infact follow fulani steps and create the second soka forest burial ground. That's the only thing that undeveloped lazy begging savages understand.

Who do you call intruders? People your Fathers fought and shed blood just to keep in the same country with them??
Maybe you've never been to the Southeast Before, but there are many Yorubas living in Igboland. They're just like other Nigerians living elsewhere; only that when they commit crimes or flout the local rules, people don't gather and harass or lynch them because they're not Igbos.

The yoruba kingship and infantile ranting, why are these Yorubas behaving as if the igbos are colonial masters who have been exploiting their resources unjustly and must be made to leave. This is one Nigeria and the constitution remains supreme,so nobody has right in this context to say he is accomodating any Nigerian,it is the Igbo peoples right to dominate any part of Nigeria they so wish.
So deal with it or blame your Awolowo and the rest, for insisting on one Nigeria.

Conflicting infos on this case makes settllement difficult. From the news above we gather that Igbos first beat up the chiefs sent by the oba to mediate. Can this be true?

Make of it what you will.

Then comes the story of an Eze. Worried by his alleged disrespect for his host and apparent disdain for the Akure monarchy, the man had been suspended as the Eze Ndigbo by the Deji of Akureland, Oba Ogunlade Aladelusi Aladetoyinbo, Odundun II, whose office had bestowed on him the title in the first instance. What was Iloh’s infraction? A market in the city, which had hitherto enjoyed the leadership of indigenes of the state capital, had succumbed to the subtle but powerful mercantile and commercial power of their Igbo brothers. Before the natives knew what was happening, the Igbo had imposed their suzerainty on the market and were not only determining the leadership of the market but ensuring that natives did not have a say in the affairs of their own market.

Worried by what they tagged native colonialism on their own land, a spat had occurred between some Igbo in the market and the natives. Afraid that this could turn violent, the Deji, one of the most humble kings to have ascended the monarchy in this part of the country, was said to have invited the Igbo leader for a meeting last Saturday through his Iru Okun, the king’s staff of office. The insignia was reportedly seized by some Igbo hirelings of the man, while the Eze did not honour the Kabiyesi’s invitation. Oba Aladetoyinbo was said to have invited the man again for another meeting on Monday and the latter stormed the palace wearing his haughtiness and conceit on his sleeves. He was reported to have preened himself in the presence of the Kabiyesi, making calls on his cell phone before him and telling the Deji that even King Solomon in his wisdom could not dare to look down on those who had equal intelligence as him. Disturbed by this ride on a self horse and spit on their king, the chiefs present in the palace had collected his beads. The man reportedly later mobilised some Igbo youth to protest against the monarchy.

You dont expect anybody to have reverence for a culture that promotes insolence, where by the kingship has been sold to the dogs. In a situation where most of the Obas in Yoruba land are celebrated miscrants or how do you explain away an Oba like the Akiolu in Lagos,Deji of Akure and even the IFe saga where the Ababoaku had to run away for his their life.
In all honesty, the Yoruba Obaship system needs total overhauling,it is bringing total disdain and disrespect to the Yoruba nation.

Stick to the theme of this discussion, and you run less of a risk of going off at a tangent.
If you have no intention to abide by customary laws which apply to Akure, naff off! Simple.

Olusanya said the Eze Ndigbo “uttered some uncomplimentary words such as ‘your people caused the problem,’ ‘King Solomon had advisers, I can only advise you and if you like it you take it and if you don’t like it you don’t take it’.”

So the bolded are the crux of the matter? That he asked the Oba to either accept or reject his advice, and he answered a call (probably an emergency call) in-front of the Dejo?

Looks to me that the Dejo and his people are indeed the cause of the problem. They could have handled this issue more maturely. But they made a mountain out of mole hill.

- He disrespected the Oba and traditions by wearing a crown and beads to the palace.

- He made "uncomplimentary" remarks about the Oba and his people.

- He was taking and making calls before the Oba.

- His people had beaten up Akure chiefs sent to the market.

- He did not answer the Oba's initial summons.

- It is an affront to the Oba to have a non-indegene heading a market in Akure, even if such person was popularly elected.

Did I leave anything out?.
When are you guys going to make up your minds on which tale by the moonlight to stick to?.
By the way, from the OP,I see the Deji palace still refer to the guy as Eze Ndigbo.I thought the Oba had removed him by fiat?.Why give him the recognition still?.
