Robert the Haunted Doll was once owned by Key West painter and author Robert Eugene Otto. The doll, whose story inspired the 1988 movie titled “Child’s Play” is alleged to be possessed by evil spirits.

In 1906, the Otto family, a well off, artistic couple and their son, had moved to Key West Florida in the US employing a number of servants in their household. It was known that in the Otto household, the treatment of the servants was harsh and occasionally abusive.

As revenge, a certain servant of Bahamian origin, who practised voodoo gave a sailor looking doll to her master’s son, Robert Eugene Otto. Little did they know that the doll was possessed by evil spirits.

The young son, Robert immediately took a liking to the doll and named it after himself. From the moment he received it, the young Eugene Otto would virtually never let Robert the Doll out of his sight.

As time passed, the boy’s parents began noticing strange events whenever he was playing with the doll. First, it was just voices; later they began to hear their son talk to someone who responded back even though no one was around except the doll.

After a string of paranormal events continued to occur the parents and servants became convinced there was more to Robert The Doll. Things went from bad to worse soon afterwards. Servants began to hear giggling in the middle of the night from an unrecognizable voice, while the family began to find other toys that belonged to their son mutilated and destroyed.

The Young boy’s mother would hear a scream from his room, burst in, and find heavy furniture turned over and destroyed – and every time this happened, the boy would cry ‘Robert – the doll did it!’.

Robert the Doll’s terrifying reputation continued to grow as neighbours in the area witnessed unusual things. Many claimed they saw the doll moving from window to window, watching them while visitors to the Otto’s house stated that they noticed that Robert’s expression would change occasionally.
