OneNaija: Actually pidgin English didn't start in Nigeria. It started from Sierra Leone keorle(i think i spelled it wrong) and liberian, the slaves brought that language back to West Africa and spread it to every nation in West Africa. if you haven't noticed, every west african country that speaks pidgin english dialect are similar to Nigerian ones except they call there's something else. We didn't start it, Sierra leones and Liberians did, Yoruba (i believe) perfected it for Nigeria. |

Interesting topic. now, we have pidgin(not pidgin English) and broken English. people usually take both as same. Pidgin is a language used for communication by parties who do not speak same language. eg, when the Portuguese came to naija, they communicated in pidgin thereby bringing about words like pickin, boku(meaning plenty). broken is a poorly structured english, which i believe we call pidgin in naija. this is a very broad topic and i am looking to learn more. |

Nigerian Pidgin is an English-based pidgin or creole language spoken as a kind of lingua franca across Nigeria that is referred to simply as "Pidgin", "Broken English" or "Brokan". Nigerian Pidgin English was greatly influenced by the Saro or Krios who infused words like "na" into Nigerian Pidgin. It is often not considered a creole language since most speakers are not native speakers, although many children do learn it early. Nonetheless it can be spoken as a pidgin, a creole, or a decreolised acrolect by different speakers, who may switch between these forms depending on the social setting. Its superstrate is English with Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo as the main substrate languages. Ihemere (2006) reports that Nigerian Pidgin is the native language of approximately 3 to 5 million people and is a second language for at least another 75 million. Variations of Pidgin are also spoken across West Africa, in countries such as Ghana, and Cameroon. 1 Like |

iboboyz: Voted best answer in regards the subject. Pidgin did not originate in Nigeria as stated above. There are variations spoken in most Anglophone countries including "english speaking" cameroon that are comprehendable by most parties. Its origins are Krio which is why till date there are similarities with West indies pidgin and West African pidgin e.g "Unu" vs "Una". |

FYI Pidgin English, was born when early Africans or slaves tried to communicate with their colonial masters. It is a mix of different influences, but leans more to the colonial British English or Victorian English. upon close inspectin you'll be amazed how proper and accurate some of the words are compared to English in the dictionary. E.G Palaver (palava), Pickin (what the white us to refer to as negro children) vex (anger or temperance) etc pick any word in pidgin and check it out on the dictionary ull be amazed at how proper pidgin is. Others were just shortend words like "comot" derived from come out e.t.c 3 Likes |

I read somewhere that pidgin english originates from the portugese during d colonial era when they trade off the coast of Nigeria and this ease the communication gap btw them then, for instance the word "sabi" means "know" in portugese hence you can hear a pidgin sentence like "i no sabi'' meaning 'i dont know' |

PIDGIN A term used in both a general and a technical sense for a CONTACT LANGUAGE which draws on elements from two or more languages: pidgin Portuguese; a Spanish pidgin. The general sense As generally understood, a pidgin is a hybrid ‘makeshift language’ used by and among traders, on plantations (especially with and among slaves of various backgrounds), and between Europeans and the indigenous peoples of Asia, Africa, and the Americas, especially during the heyday of European expansion (17–20c). Because the word has often been used and discussed pejoratively, it carries such connotations as ‘childish’, ‘corrupt’, ‘lazy’, ‘inferior’, ‘oversimplified’, and ‘simple-minded’. Etymologically, there appears to have been only one pidgin: Pidgin English, also known as Business English, Pidgin-English, pidgin-English, Pigeon English, Pigeon-English, bigeon, pidgeon, pidjin, pidjun. This was a TRADE JARGON used from the 17c onward between the British and Chinese in such ports as Canton. In 1826, B. Hall wrote: ‘I afterwards learned that “pigeon”, in the strange jargon spoken at Canton by way of English, means business’; in 1845, J. R. Peters noted: ‘Pidgeon, is the common Chinese pronunciation of business’ (OED). It should be noted, however, that Chinese (Coastal) Pidgin English or China Coast Pidgin is now a technical term referring to a contact language used between speakers of English and Chinese from the first half of the 18c until the early 1970s. http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1O29-PIDGIN.html |

Well,i think i should contribute to this Topic.Pidgin English emanates from Freed slave in Freetown, the capital of sierra leone.Im a sierra leonean/Nigeria,i spent most of my childhood in Freetown. The pidgin English there is so conk to the extent that if one does not listen well,he wont understand what the speaker is passing across. For instance,i met a warri Girl when i was doing my Youth Service in sokoto.i went to Visit her one day and i asked her that" PLEASE, I WAN KAKA" It was a Great suprise that she doesnt understand what i meant.Though, its a Pidgin English for"i wan go pupu" as we put it here in Naija.so,from my own submission,i agree with the fact that Pidgin English originate from Creole people in Sierra leone |
