Nine decomposed bodies with identities yet unknown have been recovered at Nworie River in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

This was disclosed by the Special Adviser to the Imo State Governor on environment and transport, Chief Willy Amadi, while briefing journalists in Owerri on Saturday.

According to him, the bodies of these people were discovered through the machines used in clearing the weeds of the river before the proper drainage of the river would commence.

He pointed out that the cost of the drainage was N7.5 billion, which the Federal Government is sponsoring through the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

The Special Adviser pointed out that it was not true that the Imo State Government was financing the project as it was alleged in some quarters. Chief Willy Amadi, who is a legal practitioner, said that the said amount of N7.5 billion was already in this year’s budget of the NDDC.

Answering a reporter’s question on what the state stands to gain from the project, he said that it would be used for sea transportation, recreational centre and building of four bridges that would help to construct roads in Owerri.

Apart from these, he pointed out that there would be no place along the bank of the river where criminals could hide to carry out criminal activities.
