Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Yakubu Alkali

By Gboyega Akinsanmi

A group of armed persons at the weekend, allegedly, attempted to kidnap the chairman of Ilamoshe Community Development Association, in Ejigbo Local Council Development Area of Lagos State, Mr. Val Iwuchukwu.
Eye witness accounts said Iwuchukwu was seized along Gbajumo Street, at Oke-Afa, about 6:45 pm, but a group of women quickly intervened to frustrate the mission of the gunmen.

THISDAY gathered that the CDA chairman was hit with repeated heavy blows by the six abductors before he was ordered into their vehicle.

But some women, numbering about 30, it was gathered, foiled the abduction mission by blocking all entrances and exits from the Ilamoshe estate before putting a distress call to the Divisional Police Officer of Ejigbo LCDA, who promptly sent a police rescue team that eventually picked up Iwuchukwu, who was then dazed by the blows he had received.

The women contacted the police through an SMS, which read: “It was while the kidnappers were dragging Iwuchukwu to a vehicle parked some metres away from his house that his wife (Ifeoma) was attracted by her husband’s shout and rushed to the scene.

“His wife’s presence attracted sympathies of over 30 women in the neighbourhood that formed human shield on the victim thereby making it difficult for the kidnappers to easily execute their plot.”

A statement by Iwuchukwu’s counsel, Mr. Sunday Chibudo, said it was at this point that a team of policemen, “led by Inspector Ali from Ejigbo Police Division, came and rescued Iwuchukwu, arresting Ola Olatunji, but five others are still at large.”

The CDA chairman has, however, allegedly accused a land speculator, Ojo Barber, of being the sponsor of the assailants, urging the state government to probe the kidnapping saga that has thrown the community into fear.

The association said the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution should prosecute Olatunji and his accomplices.

The CDA also wants the security agencies “to investigate and take necessary action against the complicity of the Ojo Barber family, their counsel C.O. Odunsi, in this kidnap saga and make them answerable for their criminal conduct, and to direct the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, to send his men to our community to safeguard life and property.

Unless explicitly stated, i believe we need to suspend judgement and stop turning every post into tribalist fighting grounds.

No woman anywhere would be crazy enough to approach the armed men. They blocked the exits (most likely with their cars).

That is not a tribal thing and they could as well be Yorubas.

Stop inflaming tribal tensions.
