The major factors which determine the lifespan of a rechargable battery will depend on how it is kept, how it is charged, the temperature it attains while charging or during usage, relative humidity, etc. In immoderate cases, it can get to the extremes. for example, an L-16 could be killed in a year by a serious overcharging. Likewise, some batteries which are occasionally charged (maybe in less that 20 times per year) has lasted more than 30years.

Batteries can be destroyed in a day, consciously or unconsciously subjected to overcharging. A gel battery was destroyed in less than 24hrs after being over charged with a large automotive charger.

Uncharging, as being said before, could also terminate the lifespan of a battery. A battery, with a lifespan of over 30years, could be destroyed, even in less than few months, when left in the port and not subjected to charging. Even the styled "dehydrated charge" (where acid is added to a battery when needed) have a ledge existence related to 18 months at major. They are not completely dehydrated - they, perhaps, are actually brimmed with acid, the plates shaped and electrified, and then the acid is dumped out.
