Judge John Adeyeye told him: "The accused is hereby sentenced to death by hanging. This will serve as a deterrent to others in the society. "May God have mercy on your soul." Among them were 54 soldiers who refused to fight the terrorist group Boko Haram – which is seeking create an Islamist state in Nigeria. The soldiers, who appeared before a court in the capital city of Abuja, are expected to face a firing squad. GETTY Several soldiers were acquitted by a court in Abuja Lawyer Chinonye Obiagwu said: "There is huge public support for the death penalty – about 65 per cent. "When there is armed conflict there is always a tendency for the society to support capital punishment, not only for military offences but also for crimes like armed robbery.
