Summary

1. Protect your device with a lock (password, pin, fingerprint)

2. Manage your app permissions properly, this is a must for avoiding malware!

3. Disable Unknown sources in your developer options when not in use

4. Watch what you click when browsing (goes without saying)

5. Keep your OS updated as well as your apps

6. An antivirus app is not really necessary, but having one doesn't hurt if you enjoy its features.

the emphasis on a phone lock is to prevent cases of analogue hacking, it can not protect you from malicious links or apps.

an example of what I mean:

leaving your device unlocked can expose you to malware, as it takes someone with bad intentions only a few seconds to install a spy app or something similar unto your device.
