Nigeria’s telecommunications operators reported an 11.9 percent rise in the year to September 2015 in their subscriber figures, according to statistics released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). This is according to a report by telecompaper.

The report revealed that GSM operators MTN, Glo, Airtel and Etisalat led the growth, as the total telecom subscriber base grew from 134.5 million to 150.7 million.

According to the NCC, the CDMA and fixed wired/wireless segments did not contribute anything to the growth, as these two segments continue to lose subscriptions.

The report further revealed that MTN was the largest operator with 62.5 million lines, down 0.5 percent compared to the end of June. Airtel showed the strongest growth in Q3, of 5.3 percent to 31.1 million. Glo was still slightly larger, at 31.3 million customers in September. Etisalat was in fourth place with 23.5 million customers.

Also, the figures show that the deactivation of unregistered mobile lines, as instructed by NCC, led to a loss of 357,997 active lines in September. From 151.02 million active phone lines in August, the number of lines declined to 150.66 million in September. Teledensity fell from 107.87 percent in August to 107.61 percent in September.
