January marks the starting point of a New Year and a period when thousands of people New Year’s resolutions are set. Many resolutions are related to weight loss goals, and individuals attest to make changes to weight loss this year. However, only a few months later, the resolutions are abandoned, and people fall back into their unhealthy patterns.

The problem with resolutions is not the resolution itself, but the lack of goal setting behind it. Knowing what your goals and understanding of how to structure them, will make you achieve what you set out to do.

Fortunately, there are many ways to set your weight loss goals this year:

Develop a Plan:

The development of a detailed plan will let you put your weight loss goals into action. By creating a step by step plan, you will be able to expand on what the weight loss goals are for this year and how you can achieve it.



Write it down:

Write your write your weight loss goals this year down. Take a step further by posting the weight loss goals are written in places you check frequently. Diaries are great reminders to keep your motivation to achieve the weight loss this year.



Know the Reasons Why You Are Setting Your Weight Loss Goals:

Knowing why you set your weight loss goals this year is as important as setting them. Take the time to recognize the other reasons why weight loss goals are an important resolution. There is no right or wrong answer. Do you want to have more energy? Do you wish to be near your grandchildren? No matter the reason, reminding yourself why you wanted to achieve weight loss this year will make you focused.



Be Specific:

Make sure your weight goals are specific. Don’t get lazy, it will be easy to fall back to bad habits which will render you from achieving your weight loss goal this year. Most people like to set a specific timeframe or target to accomplish what they’ve started. For instance, instead of having a goal that you want to lose weight in February; have a goal that you want to lose 12 pounds by January.



Set Small Weight Loss Goals:

The smaller and more accurate you make your weight loss goals, the greater the chance you will be able to go through each of them. If the target can be achieved in a month, a week or even a few days, meeting every little goal is a step in the right direction.



Make Achievable Goals for Yourself:

Focus your weight loss goals around what works for you. For example, if you hate the gym, do not set a goal that requires being in a gym five times a week. Instead, choose activities that are better aligned with what you enjoy doing. If you take pleasure in the goals you have set, it is more likely that you will achieve them.



Develop New Healthy Habits:

For you to achieve weight loss this year, it is important to recognize unhealthy eating habits that do not work for you in the previous years and change them. Maybe you need to eat breakfast or dinner with dessert. Identify eating habits that could hinder your weight loss goals this year and select a new healthy habit to incorporate into your life, such as drinking 64 oz of water each day, or measuring and weighing all foods.



Reward Yourself:



Each time you reach your weight loss goal(s), reward yourself with non-food items, such as a movie night. Be proud and confidence of what you have achieved, no matter how small or big.

Setting your weight loss goals this year will take time and involves handwork, but it is possible as long as you structure and plan your goals. Good luck!
