Western Education And Our Africaness As A Nation by Misterdhee1(m): 11:21am On Jan 29, 2016
Ever since the advent of Western Education in Nigeria in the 19th century, the Educational profiles of Nigerians have been witnessing astronomical increase yearly. Within the last decade, the average number of graduates the Nation's bulk of tertiary institutions turns out yearly is put at a staggering 600,000 per year, with over a million candidate vying for admission in these institutions on a yearly basis. The response of our countrymen to Education has been huge, with the ultimate dream of an average Nigerian parent being to provide sound and quality education to his or her children, up to the level these children could stand up among their peers. Nowadays, being a BSc, BA or BTech Holder, in Nigeria is considered ordinary, because the Nation boasts of several millions of her citizens with the same qualification. For this reason and some others, it is not surprising to note that a further hundreds of thousands of Nigerians possess higher degrees (MSc, MTech, Doctorate, Prof). Education is a huge term in Nigeria.
With such an impressive number of Educated Nigerians, the Nation has witnessed positive changes in her status as a sovereign state, as well as in her existence as a Nation. Many Nigerians have gone on to reach unimaginable heights in their quests for knowledge, with the Nation having one of her countrymen as a recipient of the prestigious Nobel Laurel, in Professor Wole Soyinka. Nigerians embracing Education has brought about massive Technological Progress in our various sectors. With Education, Nigerians have surely become better men and women.
Unfortunately, with all these Educations, Nigeria have lost one major thing; our identity as a People. With Western Education, we have been thought to think, act and live like Westerners, which in candid truth, we aren't and we will never be. Nigeria as a Nation, is known for her rich cultural heritage and traditions, with a way of life that depicts her people's Africaness. Our Moral Standards as Africans have for long distinguished us from the Westerners in strong terms, but these standards are been gradually replaced by the Westerners', with our exposure to Western Education. Western Education has thought us to think, act, and live like the Westerners as against the African standards. Modern day slavery it is called! What Can We Possibly Do To Stop This Decay In Our Society? Continued at https://consmess./2016/01/29/western-education-and-our-africaness-as-a-nation/
