blueAgent: There Is A Nigerian Astronaut In Space....yes,we already have Tunde Abacha in space...lol There is a Nigerian Astronaut in space and he needs your help FEBRUARY 15, 2016 BY VICTOR EKWEALOR Nigerian Twitter is one of the most fun places to be on earth. You cannot go through your timeline and keep a straight face. Naija people would not let you keep a poker face required to scroll through the social web detached. You will either laugh, cry or even curse. From the obnoxious wolves of Naija Twitter forcing unnecessary trends to the armchair hypocritical philosophers and social media activists, there is no dull moment on Nigerian Twitter. Over the weekend I stumbled upon a startling revelation while scrolling through my Twitter timeline, apparently there is a Yoruba man floating in space somewhere and we did not even know. In learning about this Nigerian astronaut, I was so full of admiration and pride for my country, but further investigation revealed a nasty norm. From the look of things, Air Force Major Abacha Tunde has been floating in space since 1990, that is 26 years now(never mind his cousin forgetting basic 2+2). And his cousin that is a namesake of one our big pastors around here has been soliciting for funds from foreigners to help bring the astronaut home and of course promising to share entitlements with them in ‘due course’. I am not going to dissect the intricacies of this scheme’s folly like the fact Dr. Bakare Tunde does not know that 1990 till now is 26 years and not 14, or that after 26 years (or 14 as you wish), Major Abacha is hanging somewhere lacking gravity and is still ‘in good humour’ as the letter claims. I am not going to poke holes into the story. My major concern is the fact that this is coming at a time when Nigeria is trying to rebrand and save face amidst a tainted global image. At a time when we are flooding Twitter with # NigeriansAreNotCriminals , somebody is somewhere fabricating the most incredible tales of Nigerian spacemanship to fleece foreigners to the detriment of the already battered Nigerian image. Apparently, this scam has been around for a very long time now, counting over 6 years and beyond. Three years ago, the National Space Research and Development Agency (NSRDA) said 2015 was the year they would produce the first Nigerian astronaut in space and 2015 came and went, we did not hear anything from them, maybe this year again then? Astronaut in space or not, somebody was actually doing their homework and studying the terrain. The news apparently made the scammers dredge up the astronaut story, dust it up and look for new magas . An uninitiated mark would be conned because looking the story up on Google would lend it some credence with the NSRDA story somewhere in the background as backing. Thanks to a brave woman, there is a Nigerian flag in the North Pole and Mountain Kilimanjaro of course. There is a good representation of Nigeria everywhere. But everybody take note, we are NOT in space yet. We will get there someday soon. NSRDA said 2015, maybe 2016? Or sometime in the nearest future, we are just not there now. Please just leave Air Force Major Tunde Abacha to hang in space and keep taking selfies, we would be in contact with him on Instagram. And tell everybody to tell everybody, spread the word. |

blueAgent:NO,NIGERIA IS NOT LEFT BEHIND BECAUSE THIS NIGERIAN MAY BECOME THE FIRST BLACK AFRICAN TO TRAVEL TO SPACE IF WE ARE LUCKY... Nigerian-born Freeman Osonuga is on the verge of becoming the first Black African to travel to space. Freeman is a Medicine and Surgery graduate from Olabisi Onabanjo University. He was selected as one of the 30 people to participate in the Rising Star programme which was launched at the One Young World Summit 2014 in Dublin. He will be travelling to Bangkok, Thailand with two other finalists Keren Jackson of Ireland and Hussain Manawer of the United Kingdom to address about 1,300 delegates and a panel of renowned judges. This will take place at a special session of the 2015 One Young World Summit next month, from 18-21 November, 2015. A session which will be live-streamed to a global audience after which the winner of the space trip will be announced. The winner will undergo a G-Force training in the Netherlands to prepare them for an experience outside Earth. If selected, this space trip will add to Freeman’s list of achievements to include a Meritorious Service Award from President Bai Ernest Koroma of Sierra Leone for a 6-month Medical Humanitarian Mission to Sierra Leone during the Ebola crisis. Freeman Osonuga is a WIRED 2015 Innovation Fellow, an Associate Fellow of the Royal Commonwealth Society, a One Young World Ambassador and Founder & Executive Director, Heal The World Foundation Nigeria. He is also a 2014 TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year and one of the 2013 Ten Outstanding Young Persons In Nigeria. Although Freeman could be the first black African, it is also worthy to note that a White South African entrepreneur, Mark Shuttleworth is widely acknowledged as the first African to go to space after he returned in April 2012. Currently, there are speculations that Freeman may not be the first Black African to go to space. This is due to the fact that a South African DJ, Mandla Maseko is also in the race to go to space in 2016 after winning a different talent competition in late 2013. http://venturesafrica.com/this-nigerian-may-become-the-first-black-african-to-go-to-space/ |

mercyville:Why don't you address the main issue here? The main issue here is your ancestors selling more of their people than any other African ethnicity. It is what all genetic studies say my man. You should focus on trying to understand why this happened instead of bringing up irrelevant issues.Kongo-mbundu kings were the most educated of all black Africa kings at that time and they understood better than anybody else the politics of slavery. That is why they rose against the enslavement of their people. They did it diplomatically by sending the first black ambassador to the Vatican to ask the pope to take position against the slave trade.the pope refused and sided himself with all the white powers.Kongos and mbundu decided for war and defeated Portugal. Why didn't your Yoruba ancestors fight against slavery?Granted they were pretty uncivilised at that time and could come to terms with the white man sophistication |

Ritchiee:This is the scenario as at the moment: LAGOS, Nigeria -- In half a century of space travel more than 500 people have glimpsed the Earth from the unique vantage point of the cosmos, yet no black African has been among them. Now a Nigerian and two South Africans are in a race to become the first after being shortlisted in a global talent search to send a “young icon of the future” into the heavens. The winner will undergo intense training, experiencing extreme G-forces and weightlessness before taking off in American developer XCOR's Lynx spacecraft, on a voyage loosely envisaged for next year. Among the three is Freeman Osonuga, who is competing with 30 hopefuls shortlisted for the Rising Star Programme run by talent agency Kruger Cowne and the One Young World charity, both based in London. “It feels great, being on the verge of making history. And to be in a position to inspire a generation and the continent,” said Osonuga, a doctor at a teaching hospital in Lagos, Nigeria's largest city. “It would be a rare opportunity to be a beacon of hope to the continent, that truly we can literally reach for the stars and fulfill our potential.” Osonuga, who grew up in poverty in the southeastern state of Ogun, the youngest of six children, is no stranger to risk. The 30-year-old returned in May from six months in Sierra Leone as part of the African Union's Ebola response team, for which he was given the country's Meritorious Service Award. He acknowledges the danger in which he placed himself but maintains that “every effort to save fellow human lives” is worth the potential pitfalls. “My risk-taking ventures aren't just for pleasure or fun, but for humanitarian purposes,” said the medic, who told AFP he had always wanted to experience weightlessness. XCOR offers one-hour flights for US$95,000 (84,000 euros) on a shuttle that takes off from the Mojave Desert in California. It has already sold hundreds of tickets, although it has yet to start commercial trips. Its Lynx Mark II spacecraft is capable of carrying a pilot and a passenger over the 100-kilometre (62- mile) limit known as the Karman line — the border between the atmosphere and outer space. The Rising Star shortlist will be whittled down to three finalists who will deliver a 15-minute speech on any subject to an audience of 1,300 from 196 countries at the One Young World Summit in Bangkok in November. 'A chance at such greatness only validates that passion' A panel of judges will then decide which candidate most deserves the journey of a lifetime and the right to call themselves an astronaut. Nono Cele, 28, a leading Johannesburg-based sports broadcasting producer and director, is another of the contenders and told AFP the idea of being the first black African in space “gives me goose bumps.” “My background, my country, my struggles and my mistakes have all told me that these things are not possible for a person like me — black, female and South African,” she said. “So, to even stand a chance at such greatness only validates that passion in me that my life is meaningful. My life is valuable. And most importantly, I can make a difference.” Cele is joined by Tshepo Seloane, 25, from South Africa's northern province of Gauteng, an adviser to the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund and a campaigner on a variety of youth issues. Quite when any of the hopefuls would actually reach space is subject to the vagaries hi-tech engineering and the timetable for their flights remains as up in the air as they hope to be. A fourth contender in the race, part-time South African DJ Mandla Maseko, landed a coveted seat in 2013 to join one of the Lynx Mark II flights. He was due to fly this year after winning a competition organized by the U.S.-based AXE Apollo Space Academy but no firm plans for his trip have yet been made public. Although the stated program for the “Rising Star” winner is to board a flight in 2016, progress had been slower than expected on developing the spacecraft. Plans for an operational vehicle by 2010 slipped first to early 2012 and then to 2015. Meanwhile XCOR says on its website it only expects to start the Lynx Mark I testing phase — which will last up to 18 months — towards the end of 2015. A representative of Maseko, who calls himself “The Afronaut,” told AFP his flight had been rescheduled for “early 2016” while XCOR did not respond to requests for comment. All four candidates will claim a unique place in history if they are lucky enough to get a place on an XCOR flight, but will be following a trail blazed by Arnaldo Tamayo. The 73-year-old Cuban was proclaimed the first black person in space when he was launched into orbit aboard the Soyuz 38 on Sept. 18, 1980. The first African in space was Mark Shuttleworth, 40, a South African entrepreneur who now lives on the Isle of Man, a British Crown dependency, and holds dual citizenship. He made headlines around the world when he became the second self-funded space tourist aboard Russia's Soyuz TM-34 mission on April 25 2002. |

alanmwene:Sorry, but I don't buy this. I have another theory about the slave trade. It depleted Africa of its weakest, meekest people, who didn't have the wits and strength to escape the slave traders or defeat them. And I'm not sure if it was even a loss for us. On the contrary, the colonization of Brazil, for example, really depleted Portugal of its bravest, strongest and most resourceful, if cruel and evil, people. And that's why Portugal today is a poor country, a pale shadow of its former glory. It simply overexerted itself. |

KidStranglehold: You got it just right. Those are bantu people. And there are features unique to Bantu tribes that you won't find with Nilotes, Cushites, etc. There is nothing like looking "African." Even African Americans have specific looks common in certain tribal groups. The first thing that goes through an Africans mind when they meet ab AA is they'll be looking at your features trying to see where you may fit. Tyra could fit perfectly amongst those girls. These are bantu features - common with some bantu tribes and spread out widely; 1.Large eyes 2. "Square" face 3. Lips (bantu lips are like in your photos. The upper and lower lips are of equal thickness. She could be sisters with this Kenyan Bantus: 1 Like

makahlj2: That's why African's love African American culture right? I mean we wear their style, talk like them, and everything. Wearing NBA Jerseys, Nikes, and etc. Slavery/Colonization brought you the language you're typing in - which means your ancestors were also subjugated. I mean hey, the borders in Africa now weren't even drawn by Africans. How embarrassing is that? A foreigner came to your lands and re-drew the lines. You know the terrain better lol. If anything, you are slaves in your own nations which is far worst. If we that remained on the continent are so strong, we would have a bigger economy than our bros and sistas in America. Slavery was definitely a brain drain. They took young and fit as well as old and knowledgeable. The young and fit were preferred however, as they were easier to manipulate. The way you speak shows how limited your knowledge is. I enjoyed schooling you boy |

alanmwene: I'm not Yoruba, but I would like to see sources saying Yoruba sold their own. The fact that you got this out of the study shows that you are a true idiot. We all know Yorubaland was in turmoil during the time of Europeans arrival, their contribution to the gene pool of those taken during slavery clearly indicates a nation in strife and civil war. Kongo/Angola also contributed greatly to the slave trade due to their civil wars as well. You consider Kongo-Mbundu kings smart, but how are you smart when you accept a foreigners god? No matter if you try to tan his skin you clearly lost. You're automatically inferior from taking a deity your ancestors did not worship. Not only did they lose with their integrity, but they also lost by allowing the Portuguese to raid others while they remained complacent. Also about Yoruba being uncivilized, they have one of the oldest calendars in the world you fucking retard. I'm not even Yoruba and I know this, I just can't take ignorant asshats like yourself. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoruba_calendar |
