Hello Samjr,

You can get a smart and courageous dog in any breed of dog, what I believe you should ask yourself is what do you desire out of a dog. For example, if you were to buy a car to move from point A to B, any car would be great but your requirements on which brand you will get would be influenced by probably your marital status, time and affluence, its the same thing with a dog.

I would use myself as a case study, my first dog was a GSD (may her soul rest in peace), afterwards I craved for a Rot because I felt they had a strong pressence, but upon carrying out a small research, I changed my mind on Rots, due to the fact that I have kids and Rots temperament does not go too well with kids except when they are properly socialised, even at that, most tend to be impatient with kids.

So I went for a Boerboel because of their stable temperament and they been great with kids, till date I have never looked back on my choice, my kids play with them freely and they are very tolerant with belligerant kids, they show a lot of confidence, and on the other hand they are very territorial when they see strangers and their massive body and strength is something nobody would want to dare.

When we are out on a stroll, or public places, most people are so scared of getting close due to their looks but are shocked how my kids play with them, I call them "THE GENTLE GIANTS" ...however if I was single, I probably would have gone for a Rot

Hope this helps
Shuu?....bros dis ur dog get 6 packs oo

If you don't have kids around you then you can go for a Rottweiler.. They are smart, strong and territorial, they make excellent guard dogs....if you have kids around then go for the German Shepherd. They are smart, strong, agile, very Territorial and can of course they can bark for Africa..plus they are great with kids around...they are also well adapted to our climes..they are the most preferred breed by the police and military for a reason..

Firstly op erase that nigeria mentality there is nothing like security dog it's called guard dogs.

That being said another fact it's dat almost all dog. Breeds can be trained to be guard dogs it all depends on upbringing but research shows that doberman and rottweilers are one of the best guard dogs around especially in nigeria if ur in for a guard dog then I think should get either a rottweiler or a doberman

It's actually the GSD

I've always favored ROTTIES as my guard dogs. For me they are a great height, weight, intelligent & trainable, look intimidating (although they were nothing but cuddly teddy bears to the family, lol), and are still able to jump a 6ft fence.

Doberman, German Shepherd, Boerboel, and Cane Corso breeds are nice choices as well.

I would have suggested the Cordoba fighting dog but they are considered extinct now , the most aggressive dog to be bred. The Dogo Argentino is a direct descendant though but not as aggressive.
Just kidding o but the dog was a mean dog.

Hello guys,

Please I seriously need a good dog, but I need a smart and courageous dog.. . Please what type of dog do I go for

Generally, first consider your status

1. If u are a single guy staying alone, get a dobberman because
a. They are VERY noisy and have a loud presence
b. They are ALWAYS alert to the slightest noise or movement. Even wind blowing a nylon bag will make a dobberman bark.
c. They are more resistant to diseases than any other breed (apart from bingos) and are more of a one man- one dog breed

2. If you are married and have kids, u will want to go for a German Shephard Dog (GSD) and then train him/her on aggression. As a married man, i'll pick a GSD because
a. They are more of a family dog and will respect and protect every member of the family with almost equal dexterity and strength.
b. They can also be trained on how to be aggressive and noisy
c. They are also EXTREMELY child friendly dogs unlike Rotts and Pit bulls that are capable of eating children as seen in many published cases.

Specifically, like one poster said, u also have to consider the temperament of the dog. Even a dobberman at times can act naive and scared just like would any other breed.

So ultimately, you should consider the parents of the dog, from there u can get the potential temperament of the dog u want. Then factor in ur status (married or single).

But don't get a pitbull or a Rott. While the pitbull is dangerous to everyone including its owner, the Rott if not brought up well from the foundation months will end up being a boss of its own. At this stage u cant have total control over him/her and the breed is also less resistant to diseases when compared to the dobberman and the GSD.

Conclusion pick between a Dobberman and a German Shepherd (GSD)
