Prophecy about ESUT’s degradation
Has Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) moved forward or backward over the past ten months?
In January 2015 when a well-respected man of God, Pastor Dr Alfred Itiowe prophesied that three principal officers of the university will work to roll back the gains of the then administration headed by Prof. Cyprian Onyeji. It seemed unfathomable at the time given the mass improvement that ESUT had witnessed within the 5 years that Prof Onyeji was there as vice chancellor.

Before he left office, Professor Onyeji employed about 153 staff in keeping with one of the yardsticks for possible accreditation of several departments across the university. This was due to the fact that accreditation was imminent and the incoming administration could not possibly carry out employment exercises within weeks of assuming office, prior to the accreditation exercise taking place.
The current Vice Chancellor, Prof. Luke Anike took over and supervised accreditation exercise which saw 26 departments bagging accreditations. It is heart breaking that the evil prophecy of January 2015 began to find fulfilment under his watch. ESUT now seems like a shadow of itself barely 10 months after he assumed office as the vice chancellor.

Prophecy fulfilled by Professor Luke Anike
Professor Anike’s first action was the refusal to pay salaries to the newly appointed staff who were instrumental to a massive and successful accreditation exercise. After more than six months of discharging their duties as lecturers and technologists; with students testifying to the massive improvement in the quality of the lectures they were receiving; the new staff members were shocked to receive letters of disengagement purporting that their services were no longer needed by the university.
Just a few weeks ago the current VC vehemently submitted to the newly constituted council that the services of these disengaged staff was no longer needed. That was his response to the chairman of the council who tried to weigh-in to see a possible recall of the disenfranchised luminaries whose short stay in the institution had pedestaled ESUT on a path to great heights.

NUC Withdraws 26 Accreditations

It was timely that National Universities Commission (NUC) a responsible body saddled with the responsibility of ensuring that universities and its likes are well staffed and equipped came forward after several cries from well-meaning Nigerians to withdraw the accreditation from 26 departments in the university until a reasonable decision is taken. The NUC visited the university demanding that the institution produce a list of the staff members used for accreditation within 24hours. After due investigations NUC determined that the actions of the university were tantamount to fraud. This conclusion was reached because ESUT had employed about 153 staff members in order to get accredited and soon after they were accredited sacked the same staff members who were instrumental to that accreditation. Building and consolidating an academic institution cannot be achieved by understaffing your workforce. Sacking 153 academic staff drawn from over 39 departments, who have no accreditation makes one wonder the rationale behind the managerial decision.
At present 39 out 53 departments of ESUT are without accreditations. The question is what more could be done to ruin a university - students will no longer be admitted to those departments and those who are already in, cannot graduate unless something drastic is done.
As we speak rumour has it that the council chairman, council members, and members of the management board of the university are yet to be informed about the recent loss of accreditations, as the VC is bent on supressing the information. Who knows what else he has up his sleeves.

Accomplishment of Prof. Luke Anike So-Far:
1) Sack of about 153 staff members instrumental to 26 accreditations.
2) Loss of 26 accreditations for 26 departments
3) Complete depletion of admission processes
4) Creating conducive environment for restoration of exam malpractice – student are about to take exam, having not had lectures
5) Withdrawal and re-award of already awarded contracts by the previous administration in search of peanut that could accrue to him.

One of the major problems of Nigerian tertiary institution has been bad administration. Imagine a VC who was once a lecturer employing should tactics. This is sad indeed. I hope the NUC mere out stiffer sanctions and get the VC to do the right thing.

The worst part is the ripple effect this whole thing will have on students of the institution.
