20% is ok. Unless you want a mini flat at banana island. |

I am married with 2 kids, and my wife's kid brother of 20yrs lives with me and he doesn't work. We live in a 3 bedroom flat estimated at 400 per year. Initially I was making 80k as salary and my wife makes 30k cos she is doing a weekend only job as she schools. Now I stopped work last month cos my office owes me 3 months salary n they refuse to pay. So Tell me, is the rent ok or am suppose to settle for something lesser? 1 Like |

The allocation that works for me is that : One or two months salary is the maximum amount that should settle my yearly accommodation obligation. When I stay in this limit, I will not be financially and emotionally stressed few months before it is due for payment. 2 Likes |

30% is ok for a salary earner. I mean ur annual income. For an established business man, one month income is enough. My rent is one-third of what I earn in a month. 1 Like |

Methinks 20% - 25% optimal range. If you can optimise within the particular constraints you find yourself to get something lower than that range, the better. 1 Like |

I agree! one's house rent shouldn't exceed 10% of one's salary. There's a whole lot of things to do with money. ladyF: |

30% is the uppermost limit, don't ever exceed it, unless you want to end up as a pauper after earning so much. E.g if you earn 10m/annum, house rent must not exceed 3m/annum |

Mbkite:An average civil servant in abuja with monthly salary of 58k in Abuja will spend close to 60% of its income on housing unless u want to stay in a village or be travelling to work every day whereas the same civil servant will spend less than 20% of his salary on a better aparttment(3 spacious and well furnished bedroom as agst 1 small court bedroom) in osogbo or ibadan. So it depends on where u stay and ur taste. 3 Likes |

ladyF: Unfortunately, majority of employed graduates living in Lagos has no option than to do this even with less than 100k. Back to the topic, someone should be able to pay his/her annual house rent with three month salary at worst: my opinion though. 2 Likes 1 Share |

I think your income should determine your choice of rent! I have a separate acct for my house rent with an active standing order of 10% of my monthly salary. Anything above that, to me, is not advisable if you're a family man & salary earner. 15%, max (except if your wife is supporting financially or there's another legal source). 3 Likes |
