Signs that you are not a child of God

1. Hatred for the truth of God's Word
The gospel is described as the Word of truth (John 17:17). Those who are of God hear and practise God's Word, but those who are not of God will refuse to do the same (John 8:47). Although many of today's Christians profess to be Holy Spirit filled and tongue speaking, yet they will not accept God's Word when it speaks of repentance, sin, the judgements of God, the power demonstration of The Holy Spirit and the necessity of holiness and separation from the world. If you belong to this category of people, then you are not a child of God.

2. Disregard for God's Holy Nature and Standards
To disregard God's holy nature and standard of holiness and righteousness is to disregard the very essence of God's character. Holiness is His nature. God is holiness. And holiness is God! The holiness of God is God. When you think of God, the first thing that should come to your mind is His holiness. When you think of holiness, the first thing that should come to your mind is God. Holiness means to be separated from sin and be dedicated to the glory of God. Whosoever, therefore refuses to practice this all important foremost nature of God is not of God, his or her status in the church, notwithstanding. Psalm 97:10 says that those who 'love the LORD, hate evil.' Conversely, those who love evil and unrighteousness hate GOD.

3. Love for the world
John the beloved says in 1 John 2:15 "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him." To love the world is to love the vast system of this age that is promoted by satan and enhanced by his agents. It is to promote the world's attitude, values and sinful ways. Anyone who loves the world is also a friend of the world. One example of being a friend of the world is by belonging to worldly social clubs like Lion Club, Rotary International, Lagos Island Club, People's Club etc. It also includes participation or membership of orders like lodge, Rosicrucian, the grail message, Eckankar etc. No true believer can be part of these cults and still profess to be a child of God. You cannot walk in light and darkness at the same time (1 John 1:5). The bible warns in James 4:4 "that the friendship of the world is enmity with God, whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God."

4. Hatred for preachers of righteousness
If you hate or dislike (or support those who hate or dislike) any preacher or teacher of righteousness because he emphasises on where The Lord Jesus and the early Apostles emphasised, and will not compromise the Word of God, no matter what he costs him, then you are not a child of God. If you hate those who are truly of Christ, then you are of the devil. Satan is your father. You are only doing the deeds of your father the devil (John 8:39-41, 44). You hate the Lord Jesus Christ and His Father (John 15:18-23).

5. Continual Resistance to the leading The Holy Spirit
Paul warns believers in Ephesians 4:30 not to "grieve The Holy Spirit of God". The Holy Spirit experiences intense grieve or sorrow when believers ignore His presence, voice or leading through their unbridled sinful lifestyles. Grieving The Holy Spirit leads to resisting The Holy Spirit, this in turn leads to quenching the fire of The Holy Spirit and ultimately insulting the Spirit of grace. Hebrews 10:26-29 in the New Testament declares thus: "For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?"


6. Preference for error to truth

Christ Jesus The Lord said in John 8:47 "He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.” Anyone who rejects the truth, and embraces error is not of God (no matter the position he occupies in the church). Whoever builds outside "the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ Himself being the Chief Corner Stone" (John 2:20) is not of God. He is of the antichrist. Most unfortunately most of today's preachers, evangelists, teachers, pastors etc are building outside of this foundation and are leading millions not just astray, but to hell. The landscape is filled with error messages such as prosperity messages, faith without holiness messages, love without obedience to God's commandments, miracles extravaganza etc. Most unfortunately these messages are not from God, no matter who may be preaching them. Because we in the latter times when men have departed from the faith, these messages have become the order of the day. Paul says in 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12 that those who hate the truth shall perish. John the beloved said in 1 John 4:6 "We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error."


7. Love for wealth, fame and worldly honour
For church leaders to receive honour and recognition from worldly leaders, governments and organisations and yet see nothing wrong with that is one of the surest signs that the church of this generation has drifted very far from God. Some of these church leaders go to the extent of putting the pictures they took with worldly world leaders on the pages of their ministries websites. What a shame!

Can we imagine the Apostle Peter, John the beloved, Paul the Apostle and a host of other early church ministers receiving awards from king Herod, Pontus Pilate or Emperor Nero? As you can see what was unimaginable then, has become a form of status symbol in this generation.

The more we look at the church these days, the more any true child of God is saddened. The vanity seen from many preachers of the gospel is tummy-churning. Yet many of us profess to be children of God and Holy Ghost filled believers. Love for wealth has led many astray and put them out of the faith (although they may still be shouting Hallelujah, Praise the Lord). Paul the Apostle warns believers in 1 Timothy 6:9-10 "but they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”


8. Living without eternity in focus
Paul the Apostle says in 1 Corinthians 15:19 "If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable." The early believers of the New Testament lived with eternity in view. This was the reason they were able to withstand afflictions and endure hardness. They reckoned that their sufferings of their present time were not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed in them (Romans 8:17). They saw themselves as strangers on earth and lived as such.

To live in a contrary way is to lay up treasures on earth. It is to become covetous and focus on acquisition of properties, accumulation of wealth via more money making, buying jets etc. It is to care less on how our actions bring the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ to ridicule. It is to become enslaved to sin and unrighteousness. It is to reject the warning given by the Lord Jesus in Luke 12:15 "And He said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”

Conclusion
Being called James, John, Mary, Matthew, Sarah etc does not make you a child of God. Neither are you a child of God because you are a pastor or worker in the church. You are not a child of God because you speak in tongues, prophesy and have faith that move mountains. The size of your congregation if you are a pastor does not make you a child of God.

Those who are children of God are those who love the truth of God's Word; abide in the truth by living it. John 8:31-32 "Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Children of God like their Saviour Jesus Christ will love righteousness and hate wickedness (Psalm 45:7; Hebrews 1:9). They are not worldly and do not seek the praise of men. They see themselves as strangers and pilgrims on earth and are eagerly looking forward for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. (Matthew 11:15).
