At 16, everybody that saw Wayne Rooney play knew that this player was destined to go the very top. And to the very top, he has gone. But, the familiar failings of too much football at a very young age has eaten deep into the fibre of this great Englishman, and we must always remember him for the nail-biting moments of sheer brilliance, and not the average performances he churns out Week-in, week-out at Manchester United. Who would forget the manner with which he scored against Arsenal in 2002? A 16-year-old boy was playing against the league champions; he scored a marvellous goal past David Seaman to end the Gunners’ first unbeaten run.

He made his England debut the next year, breaking records and at Euro 2004, he established himself as a household name, and everyone took notice of this boy wonder from Merseyside in England. After the tournament, he joined United in a whopping £27m deal as the most expensive teenager in English football history, since broken by Luke Shaw’s transfer to Manchester United also. And on his debut against Fenerbache in the Champions League, he scored a hattrick. Old Trafford had a new star!!! And he was just 19.

He combined well with the other players at United and had Sir Alex for curtailing his non-exemplary disciplinary record in his earlier years at United. He won countless trophies, and when Ronaldo left in 2009, the mantle fell upon him to score the goals, and he did, including the spectacular overhead kick against Manchester City in 2011, a goal that still captivates even till today.
