On wednesday the United States government stopped unauthorised travel by the United States military personnel to 5 West African countries due to the recent militant attack on the region said the pentagon.

According to reports, the restriction to West African countries by the U S military officials limits to Guinea, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Senegal and Ghana



The spokesman for U.S Africa command said Navy Lt. Cmdr. Anthony Falvo said that “It’s just increased vigilance given the recent events that have happened in that area of the world,”, a spokesman for U.S. Africa Command.



On Sunday, atleast 19 people were killed by Gunmen at a beachside resort in Ivory Coast. It was also reported that the al Qaeda’s North African branch, Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb claimed they were also responsible for the attack.


The same (al Qaeda’s North African branch, Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb) group said it was behind a January attack on a hotel and restaurant in Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou, that killed 29 people as well as a November hotel siege in Mali.



Michelle Baldanza who is a U.S. Lieutenant Colonel, and also a spokeswoman, disclosed the the order will will remain until June 30, she also said that this does not in any way stop official travel to the affected countries.


Given the recent attacks in western Africa, we felt it prudent to make this decision at this time in an effort to ensure the safety of our personnel,” Baldanza said.

Within the continent there are about 1,000 and 1,200 U.S Africa Command forces.
