10 Annoying Questions On Natural Hair Nigerians Are Tired Of Hearing by Naijasinglegirl: 9:15am On Apr 02, 2016
1 You have not combed it well
I hate it when people try to maintain eye contact with me while I am struggling to comb my natural hair. People don’t just get it that no matter how many times I run my comb through my hair, humidity always wins! Shrinkage is inevitable and the tips can never stay straight like relaxed hair. I am tired of having to explain this when people make the statement above

2 Can’t you wear your natural hair out?
Often times, my friends would invite me for an impromptu event and when I decline the invite because my weaves or braids are looking old, they’ll ask me to uninstall it immediately and wear my natural hair out. IT’S NOT AS EASY AS THAT!!!
Did you book an appointment with my natural hair? You should have submitted your application 4 days after wash day!
Natural hair suffers from mood swings. I cannot just wake up one morning and decide to let it fro. It takes a lot of planning that involves my whereabouts for that week, the person I am visiting, the clothes I decide to wear and the weather reports on NTA!

3 Pack it na!
This is a sequel to 2. No, it cannot pack into a bun easily because it is not stretched and because it is short and because I have no edge control gel and because the edges won’t stay laid even when I apply gel and because IT HAS REFUSED TO PACK ITSELF INTO A BUN!

4 Okay straighten it.
Once, I complained I was having a bad hair day and a friend of mine said, “Let me get my flat iron and straighten it for you.” The previous day I had escorted her to the saloon to get her 6 weeks post relaxed hair straightened. I explained the process of heat application on hers and mine are different. She replied, “Meaning what? Don’t you know my hair is natural too?”

Idiot!

5 Why is your own like this?
People that don’t understand would just go on Instagram and look at the natural hair of Black Americans and want to call the police to arrest me because my own natural hair get as e be. Do you know their texture? Do you know that their grand mother is Latina and their great grand father is Jamaican? Do you know what is 1a 1b 1c 2a 2b 2c 3a 3b 3c 3d 4a 4b 4c 5a 5b 5c. Sister do you

6 Why can’t you do what they call bantu knots or twist outs?
Oh! Are we going to talk about my failed attempts with bantu knots and co? If I do it and ask you to accompany me somewhere, would you want to associate with me?

7 When will you put relaxer?
Hairdressers are most guilty of this annoying question. Each time I visit a new saloon, I am asked this question repeatedly. This is after they handle my hair in a manner intended to hurt my nervous system.

8 Na Wa O. Is it not strong?

Yes it is and I have gotten used to swallowing a card of panadol each time I comb it. How is that your problem? I’m also tired of being questioned on my routine. Why do I have to plait it before going to bed? Why does it define gravity? What’s that ugly hair wrap I am wearing? What are all these products? Why do I apply vegetable soup on my hair?

9 What is this style called?
Sometimes I do one style I feel is dope on my natural hair and it hurts me when I go out and it is interpreted as another style.
After spending twenty hours in front of the mirror to do what they call wash&go, an old friend would now stop me on the road to ask, “So you are now on dreadlocks?”
Or is it the time I did chunky twistouts and someone said, “This your puff puff sef.”

10 Put relaxer na. It will return to natural next month
THIS IS WHY I KEEP MY NATURAL HAIR PROBLEMS TO MYSELF because this is the solution I am usually offered by my relaxed friends. They don’t understand!
Okay when you lost your virginity, did the hymen grow and return to it’s natural state because nobody chuked anything there the following month?

I can relate to an extent.
But I have discovered that regular combing is not your friend, you need to have a style that can last a week with minimal touching.

I don't buy all that plait it up at night. If my style for the week is a bun, I just tie a scarf over it at night and in the morning apply gel and brush it till its presentable.
I only comb it once a week on wash day with a lot of good quality conditioner in it.

As for hairdressers, my hair has never been better since handling it myself....washing, combing and simple styling. For long term styles when I must go to the salon, I comb my hair myself then tell the hairdresser I have a headache so they are not to comb my hair again while doing the style. My money, my rules!

My hair is not always so fly, but I like simple. Little tricks and a little investment can make natural hair a lot better to manage.

Let me stop here, I could talk about hair all day!

I can totally relate to these three! cheesy cheesy

Natural hair suffers from mood swings.
This is so true!

Another natural hair problem is when random people admire the hair and ask if they can touch it.

Lolz, I can relate with some of this.
I don't usually get the use the relaxer line though cos my hair is soft but the rate at wc it shrinks when there is moisture ehn. And you had better combed it while wet wt enof oil or else you'll start jumping up wt the comb when dry.

Don't ever comb your hair when it is dry

Spray some water and add your hair cream

you can part it into six or so, thread it, leave it on overnight or for few hours(you can rethread it again)

Style, don't bother combing with small teeth brush. If you add a lil water(not wet), it shouldn't shrnk

Thanks sis. I have really learnt my lessons from combing while dry, still do it sometimes though when about to style it but I wld have combed it well before then. Combing with small teeth brush is a punishment besides one will lose more hair.
It shrinks after washing, but after adding cream and oils and combing it straightens more.

Keeping natural hair can be tedious sometimes, especially when your hair isn't in cooperative Society.

Howdy?

I recently decided to go natural. Just so i dont just carry the hair like that, i resorted to doing twist out using Ecostyler.

Everyone seem to be asking me why i decided to go on dreads just because of the small curls from the twist out.

The question about relaxing my hair nko? I am tired of answering that!

Lmao I can relate to almost everything! There was a time I let my hair fro and my neighbour asked me why I'm using this old school wig. Like I wanted to faint. Me that I thought I was looking fly! Anyways I quickly forgot about it when one hairdresser, yes hairdresser stopped me to compliment my hair. It's really a struggle for us natural girls!

Primitive ke? Isn't that what we were all born with? Some of us can decide not to keep it straight like the whites. Some of us love our curls, coils and kinks and their craziness and that isn't primitive. Shouldn't be!

You go natural if you transition or do s big chop. Transitioning could take a year, and you'd have to cut your straight ends off after. Big chop is just cutting all the relaxed parts off straight up. That's how I started

I have been on natural hair for almost 2 yrs now. Its pretty long and people always marvel when they see it though am thinking of having it hot-combed this year cos it tangles a lot and often breaks when I try to detangle it.
